Port to the front or rear?

Recommended Posts

The title says it all... I'm porting the LS I am refurbishing, and am trying to get some consensus on which is better acoustically or if there is a difference at all.

If the port area is large enough to avoid chuffing, then I'd port forward to minimize the time delay/lobing with the LS bass bin mouths.

I'm not adding a box underneath, just going ahead and enclosing the top/back.

Not using the tweeter in the cab, but the one on the top to align the mid and tweeter. Dennis gave me some dimensions for a slot port, and there's room for it above the k400. I've sketched and thought this over for weeks.

Having it port to the front makes way more sense.

Makes no sense to me.

Hornresp will model port position, moving it from the front to the back shows virtually no difference (it will also show you the phase).

You will need to have the speakers at least 4" out from the wall.

If you're enclosing the top/back, aren't you limited to rear porting?

Doesn't sound like it from Bruce's post, I had the same thought. Sounds like Bruce is going to make the port a slot (not round) and put it where his removed tweeter was. This is cool Bruce, we need pictures!

Will definitely do pics... Dennis gave me some different dims., and a 1 x 15 x 5 something deep would/should give a 35Hz tuning. I can adjust the length if necessary.

Yes, the slot would go approx. where the tweeter would go (height wise).

Ideally, I would replace the front baffle and have rhe slot betwee the bass horn and k400, but that would be a little difficult with the ring nails holing that pice in. I'll sketch some more out on the weekend when we get back home from Atlanta.

Use screws from the inside of the top section and some latex caulk so if you ever want to remove the vent and put things back it won't be a huge chore.
