Sub recommendation

Recommended Posts

Hello, and thank you for your help.

I have the old Reference RF-82 Floorstanding 5.1 Home Theatre system:

RF-82, RC-62, RS-52, RSW-10d

I love my system, and I loved my RSW-10d, but unfortunately my sub keeps on breaking, so I would like to replace it.

I am looking for recommendations for a replacement sub.

I think the newer systems came with the SW-112 and the SW-310, but I heard neither of them were really good.

Could I please hear recommendations for a replacement sub?

I would love a Klipsch sub, but if non-Klipsch ones are indeed a better choice, then I am open to suggestions.

I use an Onkyo TX-NR906, my room is about 500 sq.ft.

Thank yoU!

Skerra,

Welcome to the forum.

I have the old Reference RF-82 Floorstanding 5.1 Home Theatre system: RF-82, RC-62, RS-52, RSW-10d

Very nice setup.

I love my system, and I loved my RSW-10d, but unfortunately my sub keeps on breaking,

That is a shame because my RSW-10d has never had any issues in the more than 7.5 years I have owned mine.

so I would like to replace it.

What is your budget?

Primary use, music or movies?

Where are you located?

I use an Onkyo TX-NR906

That thing is one powerful AVR.

Could you possibly use two subs on opposing walls (front/rear or left/right)? The bass would fill the room much better. I won't get into technical details about it because this has been hashed over many times. If you wish to explore the topic, look into something called "room modes". Here is a nice article on setting up multiple subs also: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxgUOGOB5HbfNkh6LUtHX09aTzA/view You could keep the sub you have and add another sub to the room.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Mine is a bit over 4 years old, and it worked fine for the first 3 years, then it started giving me problems. It just simply will not power up (always the same problem). It costs about $100 to fix it, so it's not too bad, but this is the third time around with the same issue, so I'm getting annoyed with it.

I mostly listen to music (although I do watch movies too), and I live in Canada (Toronto), but please do not let that influence you in your recommendations, I can ship here from the US no problem.

I would prefer to have a single sub.

Something reasonably priced... not cheap, but something that is of good quality and worth its price.

I don't mind paying a bit more for better quality, but I would like to keep the price range reasonably in line with my existing setup.

So $10,000 just would not make sense for a sub with my setup, but whether it's $500 or $800 or $1,200 it does not make that big a difference if the quality differential justifies the price.

Having said that, I'd love to hear what you guys recommend at different price points.

Around $1.5k, you can get a Reaction Audio Echo 18. It would probably have the output of 5 or 6 RSW-10's. Haha!

Other options would be from great companies like Rythmik, SVS and PSA. All 4 companies that I mentioned in this post are exceptional and some have 45 day in-home trials.

I haven't heard anything about reaction audio as I don't personally know anyone who owns one but the reccomended one above seems like a heavy hitter at 1500$. Psa also makes good subs and you could get one in black ash to match your speakers finish perfectly

Pay a little extra but what's 200$ for a matching wood veneer finish over texture black?

I had the SB-2000 but I have never owned the R-115SW. The SB-2000 is a wonderful little sub.

The SB-2000 is a small sealed 12" sub and the R-115SW is a 15 vented sub. Is there any particular reason you singled these 2 subs out? Price?

I would think the PC-2000 and the PB-2000 would be a better comp to the R-115SW.

Thank you for the recos.

Has anyone heard both the SVS SB-2000 and the Klipsch R-115SW?

I'm wondering which one sounds better.

The Klipsch would destroy this particular SVS in terms of output around 20-25 hz.  They're not my favorite for music, but for LFE's in movies, they're hard to beat at their price.
