Speakerlab khorns

There was an ad in Rhode Island for a pair of klipschorns. Turns out they are speakerlab clones. I have a second chance at buying these for $600. He built these himself after buying the kits directly from the factory. He seemed to know his stuff. I know nothing about these. Should I stay away from this since there are too many variables? Please help

Even if the fellow did an excellent job in assembly there are lots of variables because the SK evolved a bit over the years.

I’d rate the following although others might differ.

A fir ply bass bin is better than the mdf.

A metal mid horn is better than the fiberglass.

The tweeters are plastic Speakerlab, Electovoice  T-35, and EV-350 going from not so good to super wonderful.  The T-350 is rare and expensive so  let’s take that out of consideration .

There were 4 ohm and 8 ohm woofers by Speakerlab and I’d kinda prefer the 8 ohm if I were buying.  These both have specifications which are way off the Klipsch.   But people find them workable.

There were at least two versions of crossovers.  One with switches, one with knobs.  I’ve only play with the switches and  I think the knobs are better.

Of course, you need the walnut version of the cabinet.

The price is good if you’re getting some or all of the more preferred items.

I had a chance, years ago, to buy set of these.  They were empty.    I was going to buy them, fill them with Klipsch components.  It was before aftermarket equivilant stuff like Crites woofers were available.  I would have had to buy all the stuff from Klipsch and it was insanely expensive.  I gave up on it.  The cabs themselves looked pretty good to me.  They were nicely built.
