hometown audio gear

Paducah Home Theater

So what kind of gear is/was made in your home town similar to Klipsch being in Hope? Here’s what’s going on in Paducah, or at least within like 15 minutes from where I live:

Wampler Pedals, high end guitar pedal manufacturer, used by Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Dweezil Zappa, and more:

Warehouse Guitar Speakers, speaker manufacturer for guitar cabinets, the owner lives next door to a friend of mine. These guys and Wampler are next door, probably the same people behind it but not sure.

Hawley Products, pro speaker cone manufacturer. Acoustic Elegance, JBL, possibly even Klipsch but I dunno, uses their cones. If you’re making a nice pro/paper coned woofer, this is the go-to place. They also make and install surrounds and some other parts.

Pretty positive that Eminence uses Hawley cones, and I'm pretty positive that Klipsch uses custom Eminence speakers similar to the Kappa something for the pro line, if so then most likely those are made right here.

Rapid Die & Molding in Wisconsin is the other go-to place for this kind of stuff. Todd Yokcum here in town owns both this and Hawley, it's the same people behind the scenes. Most all of the smaller Acoustic Elegance stuff comes from here but the TD-18H is more from Paducah.

the now defunct Credence, which is who made many of the most popular car audio speakers and subs before everything went to China. Kicker, Bostwick, Earthquake, Lanzar, some JL Audio, and others, all came from right here. Then along came China, and you know the rest.

Peavey about 3 hours away but they kind of suck for anything home audio.  There are a few local small beer breweries not far, that always helps improve audio enjoyment !

Quickly off the top of my head -

MartinLogan electrostatic speakers - Lawrence KS - about half hour west of me. I believe the higher end products are still made in Lawrence, the rest farmed overseas.

Sutherland Engineering - world class preamps - Kansas City. Ron Sutherland was the co-founder of MartinLoagn with Gayle Sanders.

Transcendant Sound - tube amplifier kits, the famous Grounded Grid. Kansas City

not audio... but these two things were made in my area.

The engines were tested about 25 miles from here, they rattle windows with bass that would make any sub run and hide.

Speaking of Eminence and Peavey, apparently the founder of Peavey met the founders of Eminence while they were both working in Paducah.

Apparently "Chicago Telephone Supply" didn't just do telephone equipment, they were set up to mass produce woofer baskets and possibly other things.

http://www.roger-russell.com/lsd1.htm

Sidney Corderman who was the original chief McIntosh engineer, and Roger Russell who was the director of acoustic research, came here looking for a parts supplier.

Audio engineer Ed Long worked here and apparently actually owns the "near-field" trademark, as well as inventing time aligned speakers, according to wikipedia he apparently invented subwoofers, or at least the Bag End ELF system.

Not in person but I couldn't imagine any speaker or bunch of speakers that could sound like this from 25 miles. About 20 years ago we lived about 15 miles away with just a swamp between us and Stennis Space center, it would shake the house. the first time I heard it I thought a big plane crashed in the yard.

Scary, redneck/coonasses and rockets

The public is not allowed to watch the test anymore so I borrowed this pic online.

Pretty impressive.

I've always wanted to watch a shuttle launch. Maybe I'll get to watch the new version take off some day. I think they're taking about a 2021 launch.
