Pfarinelli Posted July 1, 2016 Share Posted July 1, 2016 I have an Oppo 103 universal player connected to a Marantz 6010 receiver via hdmi. My speakers for left and right mains are Klipsch RP-280's. When listening to music, I mostly use cd's (store bought, not burned or MP3). My question is, should I purchase a dedicated CD player and connect to the receiver using decent rca's cords or should I continue with the 103 via hdmi? I am considering the Marantz 6006, the emotiva Eric-3 or the Nad 516bee. I will connect using decent but not esoteric rca cords. Thank you for your help. Quiet_Hollow Posted July 1, 2016 Share Posted July 1, 2016 Continue with the 103, but when listening to CD's (or any other LPCM source for that matter) stick to coaxial S/PDIF using a decent RG-6 patch cable or the like. Digital bus using HDMI is basically lossless and noiseless. It also can handle SACDs and Blu-Ray music discs from the Oppo BDP-103, as well as hi-res download tracks. The BDP-103 doesn't have internal DACs for anything but the 7.1 matrix outputs, so all other audio outputs are digital. Using the digital S/PDIF "RCA cables" or the optical S/PDIF (TOSLINK) from the BDP-103 will prevent you from being able to play Blu-Ray music discs and SACDs, and higher data "hi-res" files. There are no other advantages, only disadvantages... Due to bandwidth limitations, high resolution audio formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. A reduced resolution version of the same audio track will be output instead. To listen to high resolution audio formats in their best quality, please use the HDMI connection if you have a receiver that handles HDMI audio (see page 11) or use the multi-channel analog outputs if you do not (see page 16). Due to copyright restrictions, SACD audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. To listen to SACDs, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections. Due to copyright restrictions and bandwidth limitations, full resolution audio from DVD-Audio discs cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. To listen to DVD-Audio in full resolution, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections. All analog buses/cables introduce noise and distortion that digital buses don't have. I don't recommend them, especially using another "CD player" and analog RCA cables unless the DACs in your AVP or AVR are quite poor. Most AVPs/AVRs made in the last 6-8 years have extremely good DACs internally, so I don't recommend using external DACs and analog RCA cables. willland Posted July 1, 2016 Share Posted July 1, 2016 I say hook up Oppo to Marantz via stereo Rca cables using the 103's inboard DAC and compare the sound to how you are currently using with HDMI letting the Marantz do the D/A conversion.
