Woofers and Tweeters
So I had someone contact me about some LaScala that needed rescued. Seems that some curtains caught fire and fell on the cabinets. Most of the black on the top is from the curtains, but the cabinets's veneer did start to burn too. All of the insulation on the wires on the xover and on the speaker wire doesn't show any sign of heat. They're still flexible, no melted areas or cracking so I bought them. My question(s): Do you think they're worth salvaging, and if so, is there something that I should do / look for before trying them? Thanks in advance for your opinion and advice.
Karsoncookie
Cabinet wise, you know, will look new after heavy feathering sanding and Duratex or similar. I would not fret over that part at all. Driver heat damage wise, outside of my knowledge. Lars Edited July 9, 2016 by Karsoncookie
Woofers and Tweeters
Thanks Lars. I'm not worried about the bass speakers. It doesn't look like anything is damaged except the cabinets.

Karsoncookie
Myself, even if they "sound right", would always have in the back of my mind, it may be some "underperforming" of a driver or xover, from even invisible heat damage. Don't mean to rain on a parade or put a bee in your bonnet, just saying my possible concern. A speaker repair expert may possibly be able to conclusively answer this concern. Woofers and Tweeters
Looks like you scored a red hot deal! I hope it was a deal. Seeing them go for $500 makes me second guess what I'm doing.

Lars I'm less worried about the heat than something that isn't so obvious....such as the acidic soot .
Karsoncookie
Regarding the cabinet, I would rather have the fire damage than major delamination by water, assuming one is ok with the Duratex as end result. Lars
Karsoncookie
Well, at least the drivers are pretty well sealed. Xover components may have gotten what you're saying on the surface, so what? Clean/ wash/ scrub the terminal board . Lars
Karsoncookie
The screens of both drivers, I would think, are synthetic cloth, not cotton or similar i think ??????? So they would melt at some high temp. If they are intact, did not get to that temp, so maybe ok????? Especially the squaker 55, sooo deeply inset. Lars
wvu80
They look like toast to me. Are you saying you paid $500? That seems high to me for fire damaged. Are both fire damaged or just the one? I would be most concerned about getting the fire/smoke smell out. I'm not sure you can. +++ The curtains caught on fire? How does that happen? Karsoncookie
Of course we know original Kilz mostly blocks smoke smell, and I would think that with the Duratex top coat s would seal that If not the Duratex 2 coats itself. Maybe not, but I would think so. Lars

Woofers and Tweeters
Regarding the cabinet, I would rather have the fire damage than major delamination by water, assuming one is ok with the Duratex as end result. Lars It doesnt take much heat to cause the glue to melt and the veneer to d-laminate. I just hated to not try to save them.
Woofers and Tweeters
They look like toast to me. Are you saying you paid $500? That seems high to me for fire damaged. Nope, but I did pay 300. I figured that since no wires were damaged that I could have black garage speakers. Are both fire damaged or just the one? One is lightly damaged, the other looks like it was on fire for a few minutes I would be most concerned about getting the fire/smoke smell out. I'm not sure you can. +++ I agree. The smoke smell will dissipate, but I'd rather just paint them and be done. The curtains caught on fire? How does that happen? I have no idea, some sort of ignition? I've never had that happen and hope that I never do. It was a bad day in someone's paradise. I've wondered how many Belle or Khorn or... that fire or the landfills claim each year. I hope to save them.
Matthews
I just hated to not try to save them. Good score my Man! Looks like the veneer is peeled off the one side. Remove the rest and apply new. Perhaps the top as well? With a little creativity and some elbow grease, you will have these bad boys up and running in no time Put a meter to the drivers 1st thing. That will tell you something. If the drivers check and there appears to be no heat damage, fire em' up (no pun intended) Look forward to seeing what you do with these...
