derrickdj1
Considering Dolby Atmos. I have a drop ceiling in the HT part of the basement. Will these in- celing work or should I consider 2-4 small speakers mounted high on the wall. These speakers are for drop ceilings. Not worried about timber match. http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/ickelcrhothc.html?gclid=CLfRprrL-c0CFQIcaQodi6MNVg Edited July 17, 2016 by derrickdj1
dtr20
Everything I read says for atmos, either ceiling mounted speakers or atmos enabled speakers. Putting a speaker high on the wall isn't proper for atmos. For example, the rp140sa can be placed flat on a speaker which points the tweeter and woofer at the ceiling on an angle to be bounced back down to the listener. This speaker also has a keyhole mount to be hung on the wall, but this is supposed to be used as surround speakers only in this scenario. derrickdj1
SVS is suggesting 4 bookshelf speakers mounted high on the wall is OK. I picked this ceiling speaker because you can direct the tweeter. When I research atmos ceiling speakers, that is the key feature. Otherwise, nothing else stands out and the rest is processing. http://www.svsound.com/blogs/svs/75358787-intro-to-dolby-atmos These are Dolby Atmos: http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/atclcr.html Edited July 17, 2016 by derrickdj1
derrickdj1
I got the SC 99 setup. I need to run. SB speaker and then decide the possible configuration. I'm thinking 9.2.'2 and use FH/in-ceiling or on wall. I already have some Klipsch in-wall that's been sitting idle for a year. derrickdj1
I installed the Klipsch in-wall for SB and ordered 2 Atmos in-ceiling speakers to get things started for a 9.2.X system. All my surrounds are up high and should lend to the Atmos effect. The in-ceiling speakers have 8 in. woofer and 1 in. tweeter. They are made to mout on a drop ceiling which should be an easy installation.

derrickdj1
I need to get the Atmos installed and tested before considering moving surrounds. The nice thing about the drop ceiling is that it will be easy to move the ceiling tiles containing the speakers, as long as I leave enough wire. There is still a lot I don't know and will also have to see how well the avr does with this setup. derrickdj1
What are your favorite Atmos scenes? I need to get some movies lined up to test the Atmos system this week.

derrickdj1
Here is the thread I started in this topic https://community.kl...o/#entry2037648 Thanks, I was'not paying much attention to the Atmos stuff before I picked up the new avr. Jupiter Ascending is also said to be a good film for Atmos. I ran the speaker wire today and get the speakers tomorrow so, I should be able to demo the Transformers and Jupiter Ascending films. I didn't get the Mad Max. Edited July 25, 2016 by derrickdj1
derrickdj1
The Atmos speakers came this afternoon. I have installed them and am running setup. Here are a few pic's of the Atmos speakers. These are pretty beefy for Atmos, 8 in. woofer, 1 in. tweeter and angled. They have a separate bass and treble adjustment on the speakers in the 3rd and 4th pic. Testing impression to follow. oldred
derrick, Looking forward to your review. Got pretty much everything together for Dolby Atmos except ceiling speakers. Might make it a fall project. G.E.M Edited July 27, 2016 by oldred
derrickdj1
Rented the Batman V Superman, Dawn Of Justice. The Dolby Atmos, DA, speakers add some effects. Panning throughout the room is more 3 dimensional. This is just my initial impression on Atmos based off one movie. Are they earth shaking as an addition, no. If you are already setup for a good 7.X, ninety plus percent of info will be from the 7.1 system. They provide subtle effects similar to front height speakers. DA is definitely more of an immersive experience. It's a nice addition tho the HT. Initial impression for the MK870 ceiling DA speakers is very positive for use with Reference speakers. No timber problem and more than adequate for the job. These speakers or the 6.5 in. version is a good alternative to most of the stuff from the big boy companies or going DIY. DIY will not be cheaper and these are built well and look good. They can be used in a regular ceiling also. toomnymods
mad max is by far the best atmos movie out atm.. any of the battle scenes with the 18 wheeler and the dirt bikes jumping over the semi in the canyons are nice as well as the chase scenes.. derrickdj1
The DA experience on the last 1/3 of Superman V Batman was off the hook. I watched a few scenes from Transformers Age of Extinction but, realize that it was not in Atmos. I needed to go into the avr and change it from Legacy mode to object based. Atmos is a nice addition but, 11 speakers take up a lot of space, lol. A 9.2.2 setup is right for this part of the basement. Putting up ceiling speakers in a basement, beware of joist, pipes, and electrical conduits. These all limit the available space for the speaker. derrickdj1
It would be great to have a small gtg. I've enjoyed all the ones that I have been to in the Chicagoland area. Being the only one in NW Indiana, I never thought there was much interest even though I'm only 30 min. from downtown Chicago. I would have to pick a weekend when I could get the wife out of the house, lo..
derrickdj1
Just ordered a second set of the MK 870's. The dilemma is whether to use them as FH or and Top forward(TF) atmos speakers. opinions welcomed. The FH are getting a lot of work right now using the Neo X settings for the non-atmos stuff. Either way, they will be in the same spot on the ceiling. If they won't get a lot work as atmos, then the FH would be preferred The side surrounds will come down a foot and will have to be in-wll. The IW 690.
