Just Got HIP! Triple HIP!!! :D

Well, looks like I had one of those legendary Craigslist days we all hear about - saw an ad for three Klipsch speakers for $120 and they turned out to be Heresy HIP (Heresy Industrial Ported)!

They will not win any beauty contests - 7-ply birch with an ugly after-market stain job and some white paint spatter, and each speaker has three large metal eyelets drilled into the cabinets to prevent theft. (Given I paid $40 per Heresy speaker that didn't work very well...)

Serial numbers all start with "84" and then the serial numbers (e.g. 01292). Does that make them HIP I or HIP II? If HIP I, does anyone have specs?

How can anyone complain about a lack of bass in Heresy speakers? I've tested all three HIP in my 2-channel rig (swapping out), and with speakers poorly placed (see pic) five feet from the wall the bass boom is pounding my head! Are these a different spec from the standard Heresy 1?

I'm thinking of running the Heresy HIP as left & right mains plus center channel in my 5.1 home theater, using KG 3.5 for the rear surrounds or possibly KG 4.2. Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk IV sub. Do Heresy's play well with the KG series? If I get RF-7's at some point, would the HIP's as rear surrounds and center still mate well?

Thanks for the thoughts, thanks for letting me gush. I'm a happy camper!

Great find and congratulations! With pro ported Heresy's like the KP-250, the low end extension is actually not quite as good as sealed Heresy's. I know that sounds backwards, but the reason is they are more efficient and can handle more power and therefor have a higher max SPL.

Awesome Deal! I am looking at a single HIP for $125 locally and thought that was a pretty good bargain but 3 is a score for sure. :emotion-21:

The timbre match is not great between the Heresy's and the KG series and the KGs are 2 way so the mids are not as pronounced. That being said, as long as you have 3 matching up front you wont notice this unless you listen to a lot of 5 channel music. If its just surround duty for HT the KG 3.5's will be a great option and they are pretty sensitive as well and should keep up just fine with the Heresys. Their footprint and shape lend themselves well as floor standing surrounds too.

If you decide to get RF-7s then a Heresy center will not match well and you will be disappointed. However, if you decided to get a used pair of Cornwalls instead then you could have the Heresy center and Heresy surrounds for a full Heritage home theater rig which would be awesome.

Neat, this is something I can weigh in on!

I currently have a pair of KP-201s and KG 5.2s set up in the same system , the Heresies being closer together and at ear level and the KGs sitting on the floor. I'd consider using the 5.2s as surrounds, but they do have a distinctly different sound to the Heresies. To my ear, anything compared after playing the Heresies for a few minutes sounds like it has a pit in the midrange. Even my RP-280Fs sound worse by comparison. The KGs are nice, but the KP-201s really distinguish themselves with their intensely rich midrange.

If that was me with the HIPs (great find, by the way!), I'd hold out for another pair of Heresies or Cornwalls and do a whole 5.1 with nothing but them. That'd definitely be my agenda if I found three HIPs for that price, I'd pick them up and use my KP-201s as mains.

How are you putting the Heresies at ear level? I have some heavy-duty speaker stands for musicians (approx. 30"-36" high) but the Heresies seem too unstable on them. Would like to know...

Funny you should mention Cornwalls. I noticed a $250 pair with rough cabinets in need of re-coned woofers, but someone got there ahead of me. No complaints, I'm enjoying some cool jazz on the Heresies as I work... :)

Not very elegantly! I currently have one on a Synergy Sub 12 and the other on a kitchen chair of the same height. Ikea Lack tables were recommended to me as a cheap and easy way to get them where they belong, they're $10 a pop. I'm planning on buying a pair once I can make it over to Ikea!

Thanks, Tom. Have you sold your single Khorn?

Not yet, I'm not even actively trying.

I guess I am hoping that I can figure a way of utilizing it in some fashion.

I just hate the fact that it is just sitting and not being enjoyed.

Awesome great find.  I can tell you these make a great center channel speaker.  I have 4 Heresy 1's with a HIP II as the center channel.  This works out great since the HIP speakers really (re)produce great vocals and that is what most of the center channel is.  I generally have to set it about -2 or -3 db down from H1's since it is a tad more efficient.

You could try setting it up as a mono speaker in another room for background music. I think this stereo to mono converter would work at line level then just run the output into a cheap Class D amp from Parts Express like this one:

I hooked up the three Heresies to my home theater and have to concur on the Heresy as a center channel. Simply incredible! They also make surprisingly good mains, and that's without slant risers to target our ears. Very happy indeed.

I should post a pic of the rears, because it's sealed so makes me wonder where the porting is occurring on these - perhaps the front? I've never seen HIP's in 7-ply either for that matter, except for these three.

Thanks for the thoughts. Just hooked up the Heresies and KG 3.5's last night for a test run and was pretty impressed. Of course that was mostly from the Heresies up front.

I thought I'd lost the Cornwalls I saw this week, but the first buyer flaked and I picked them up yesterday. $250 for Walnut Oiled finish (needs some restoration), both woofers in need of re-coning. That will cost another $200 but the work will be done by a Klipsch specialist locally who will order OEM parts and do the work right. I cannot wait to get them in a couple of weeks!

Darned fine shopping, huh?

I seen these on Craigslist. My concern was what appeared to be water damage. From the picture it looked like they have been stored outside or something. I hope that inside the cabinet you don't find a bunch of corrosion.

Let me know how these look once you crack them open.
