are there any cheap/new midhorn solutions for La Scala type builds?

fwiw, an Altec 511B makes a reasonably good midhorn in this region (its tough to damp) - are there any cheap new one-inch format horns suitable to xover in the 400-500Hz or even 600 region?  are there any decent/cheap phenolic diaphragm horn drivers?  (I may have the little Selenium in my stash)

An Altec 511 damped with rope caulk, small amount of 30ppi or so foam in the horn throat, using a Selenium (jbl) d250x with a damped back chamber between 500hz and 4500hz can sound very good, especially for the investment.

The K-55 driver is pretty good since it goes so low--for a 1" dia. exit driver.

 

You'll have to equalize that horn, since it clearly is a controlled directivity horn design like the K-510 and the K-402.

thanks guys - I've used 511 on top of my Peavey FH1 with APT150, etc. above the midhorn and back in the midhorn driver plane.  That 2380 clone linked by Chris A. looks good for a new part.   At one time there might have been something cheap on closeout at Parts Express.  I'm too old / decrepit to consider anything seriously for a new build - maybe one more stab at a little Karlson.   I have a new midbass using a 12 and may try it with some old Gollehon which have to sit on top of a cabinet - there's no neck on the horn and don't know how low/high it will go with a cheap paging driver.

 

I am curious about scaling a Univeristy S9 Classic - sims say that would go down to almost 100Hz and up well - IF straight - it might not be good to 500 with a 12pe32 (?)   Do you guys think the Classic's geometry would choke off things before 500?

here's the 70Hz horn which is a mod of one published by RCA-Fan - its loaded with a Community "buyout" 12 - 5/8" Baltic birch for most panels other than the baffle and lid  - a very rigid build by Jesse Brunner at Triticum Audio

 

 

Here's the Gollehon - I tried a 511 on top - hoping this one will be better - might not make it (?) its a bit larger than a 511

You can also find the EV 1828/R drivers at a good price. I swapped a pair into my previous LS just to see how they would work. I felt no need to immediately remove them. I still have them and will use them on my LS refurb that's going on, and on, and on...

I've got a couple in a 3 way larger non Klipsch component build I just finished and like them a lot except for the 4500Hz top end.  Sound is great for the price.  Crossing them over at 4500 to a Tymphany 1" titanium tweeter.

If going off the a shelf, the M2380 is a great JBL clone... 2" drivers. Will cross at 500hz and can go up high without real issue. It's a CD horn but there are many worse designs.

Faital Pro LTH102 have a very good reputation and can be streched toward 600 Hz in a baffle and in a domestic setting. The larger LTH142 can go lower still. Both need some adaptors as the Selenium is a screw on driver. How well those adapors work I do not know.

for my midbass horn, I'm going to try some Gollehon laying around in my mess - they're something like a 511 but no "neck" plus the final expansion seems pretty fast (?)

The LTH142 is quite good. This is the budget horn I would choose, but not sure about the adapter to 1 inch.

I believe I took them apart when I first got them and lined the inside of the chamber with a stick on felt.  Thought that the plastic housing would color the sound unless damped.  I'd have to do some tearing again to verify.

The EV sm120 horn from the sentry 3 and 4 speakers fits the bill. Made for a one inch screw on driver and IIRC was used by EV down to 400hz. They usually be found for reasonable money.
