MTBANDMUSICINFL
Hi. I am a new owner of a Cornwall I (1984). I have a Yamaha V667 preamp with the Cornwall, and it sounds great. I was wondering if this is a good enough preamp, or should I consider another SS one? Is there any particular negatives with a Yamaha that I should be aware of? I don't want to go to tubes at this point, so please hold those recommendations. Thanks.
jimjimbo
Hi and welcome to the forum. The V667 is a very capable unit, and I think you will be just fine! It has had a bunch of highly positive reviews from all kinds of sources, so if you like the way it sounds now, stick with it. If your Cornwalls have the original crossovers in them, you may want to consider updating the capacitors. And, by the way, we love pictures!! Enjoy your speakers and system.
Woofers and Tweeters
mtband, welcome to the forum. I am a SS guy, the drawback is most don't have remotes. You will benefit from trying several power sources to hear & enjoy the differences some make. It's not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase. jimjimbo
Likely you have the B3 network in your Cornwall's, the schematic is in the Technical/Mods section of the forum, You can purchase a kit from Bob Crites to do the update yourself. http://critesspeakers.com/crossover_repair_kits.html http://critesspeakers.com/prices-crossover_repair_kit.html

MTBANDMUSICINFL
Thanks for all the help! With respect to the crossovers - since I don't have soldering skills...is it better to buy the new crossovers and possibly sell the old ones on ebay (is there a market for these?), or, buy the repair kit and pay someone to do the re-building here for me in Central Florida? Thanks.
jimjimbo
A local electronics shop should be able to do it within about a half hour. And really shouldn't be very expensive at all
J M O N
You can send your crossovers to Bob and he'll do everything for you at a very reasonable price. He'll even check all other components in your crossovers to make sure they are good. He has an extremely fast turnaround. Highly recommended.
J M O N
P.S. If you are looking solely for a solid state preamp, the Audio Research LS-3 would be an excellent choice.
jdbeachbum
In regards to the crossovers you might want to look at ALK's website (www.alkeng.com). I have a set in my LaScala's and can't say enough good things about the boards. Al makes them and ships them to you and then you can sell your old ones on Ebay. Al K. used to be a regular on the forum but I think he is largely absent now. Very smart man (met him in person) and does great work. This is my 2 cents only.
