I guess it depends on if you are a morning or night person. I love music  24/7 but listening to my tunes starts the day off right and ends it at night, right, too.

The human ear is at it's best in the AM due to resting all night with no loud sounds. Once awake, noises throughout the day tend to shift the hearing threshold. The noisier the environment the greater the effect.

This makes sense intuitively, is there scientific support?

I personally find that MY human ears are at their best right after I trim all of the hair bushes out of them.

I read once that in the old days it truly was better at night due to the more stable power grid.
