thisgsx
Just picked up a pair of Cornwalls I and wow, I can't believe that Cornwalls are big. They're bigger than the La Scalas I have in my living room and the plan was to throw these into my bedroom to replace the Fortes I currently have in there. One thing though, I'd like to put to rest the La Scala vs Cornwall dilemna for good. At least from my own perspective. I've read too many good things about the Cornwalls and couldn't pass up on these even though I know I shouldn't have. Moderators dtel Posted November 28, 2016 Moderators Share Posted November 28, 2016 Big compared to a small speaker but in the speaker world there midsize at best. I think they are just different from each other, they both do different things better, if I had to choose it would depend on the room and if I wanted to add a sub. What do you think of the sound, I use a pair in the bedroom, in two corners = killer bass but not boomy in a smaller room. Have fun

thisgsx
Here is what I notice so far. Cornwalls: bright, harsh, in your face, thinner than la Scalas, fuller in the bass region, more bass.La Scalas: warm, smooth, airy, huge and wide sound stage, more midbass/chest punch type bass.Sent from my LG-LS997 using Tapatalk

Could you please let us know the drivers in your CW's, the crossover and what amp/preamp/source you are using?
Schu
I'll put my cornwalls up against any cornwall out there that have not been modified at the lense...crites 125's, crites cast woofers and Jupiter capped B crossovers... they sound magnificent. I still prefer the effortless large soundstage of my la scala's. It's a personal preference and I could never sell my cornwalls, but they are relegated to rear duty in my system. La Scalas are also stock and unmodified.I'm running a Marantz sr6011, Emotiva XPA-5 (2nd gen) amp. When I have more time I'm going to run Audyssey on the Corns, move them back further and wider apart to see if that improves it. thisgsx
The Corns are currently about 3 feet from the back wall and about 7 feet apart.Sent from my LG-LS997 using Tapatalk

thisgsx
Not the best idea with heritage speakers...I know heritage prefers tubes but the Emotiva's sound signature is very close to the Marantz. thisgsx
Why not? I've never owned that amp and didn't know they were bad. It's not that they're bad but from what I gather, heritage prefers tubes. However, I don't believe its the amp because if it was then the La Scalas would sound just as bad. If anything it's a reflection of the speaker itself that is giving me that sound and not so much the amp.Sent from my LG-LS997 using Tapatalk
jimjimbo
saying that heritage prefers tubes is a very generalized statement. There's a lot more to it than that. Room configuration, source, type of music, etc. all plays into it. It's not the amp, it's the positioning of the speakers. 1 foot off the wall and 12 feet apart would be much, much better. jjptkd
5 hours ago, thisgsx said: Cornwalls: bright, harsh, in your face That was pretty much the same experience I had when I turned them up loud but they sounded really good low to mid volume. The best sound I ever got out of mine were placed in the corners tight to the back and side walls toed inward slightly. The cabinets really seem to resonate bass and corner loading really helped with bass extension. I read later on after I sold them that bad O-rings in the mid horn could have been the cause for harshness at higher levels but I didn't get a chance to replace them. There's too many factors involved and saying heritage prefering tubes is a generalized statement, but I got that from all the reading I've done the last few years in regards to the heritage line. I don't have first hand experience so I shouldn't have used that statement. Sent from my LG-LS997 using Tapatalk

thisgsx
No biggee! So the widest I was able to place them apart are 10' toe'd in, left tower in a corner and the right tower sits right where the living room opens into the kitchen and yes the sound stage has expanded tremendously. You are right. These Cornwalls need to be at least 12 feet apart. The imaging is near perfect without Audyssey. The sound is big and a lot smoother than it was before although still bright and in your face. I believe with more tweaking it should clean and even out more. Running Audyssey will probably clean it all up.Sent from my LG-LS997 using Tapatalk
eq_shadimar
So having owned Cornwall's and Heresy's for over a decade now I can understand the bright harsh and in your face comments. My suggestion is to add more bass. Having sufficient subwoofers to balance out the efficiency of the horns makes all the difference especially when going for those movie theater/club/concert levels of volume. The problem is that the bass simply can't keep up with the horns as you crank up the volume. If you have some subwoofers it balances out beautifully.
