Choosing a Preamp by tube..

I always knew NOS knew something about valves!!?? I've owned a couple of Mapletrees from the good Doctor. He's a big fan of 12sn7 vs. the more common 6 series. Fine sounding, neutral, simple design, reasonably priced. Made by our friends to the North. Good call.

Maple is MORE THAN reasonably priced... it's downright cheap. I bet it sounds awesome. The wright also looks so good.

while I have not committed, however I am talking with D. Sachs about the custom SP14. I need extremely quite circuitry and at least a 6sn7 performance. I think I have found which unit I am going to buy.

I do like the fact that these recommendations are sub $1,000... that would be nice to be sure, but I really want this to be the last line stage I buy. the eastern electric is good... it's fine for a $500 pre using 12au7's, but it's slightly noisy coming from what I am used to... an all Class D system that is absolutely black.

I want a huge sound stage with great depth and separation... and of course I want it to be silent.

I wasn't in the position to buy rodneys NBS that just sold, but I would be now... but I feel this SP14 might give it a run for it's money.

at this price point, I would prefer point to point... but I think this should fill the need (I hope)

I'm a stickler for quiet too, extremely quiet. Which is why I mentioned Dennis Had in that you own his amp already. My Inspire is probably the quietest piece of tube gear I've owned, Class D silent even through these Big 402's.

I spoke with Don Sachs about his KT88 amps but went another direction but he has great recommendation from Jim McShane who I have bought numerous tubes and is known as one of the pre-eminent HK Citation amps experts. It would be nice if Don offered a demo model to try or offer a trial period? I don't think he does as he builds on order. Good Hunting

I really wanted to try that NBS that just passed the garage sale section but the timing wasn't right and the price is really pushing what I would ever spend. I would lovethe cost to be much closer to, or under, a grand

Why I do believe a certain thebes ended up with that NBS and is quite pleased.:D

Mark Deneen, until he imploded, was a frequent contributor here and a preamp designer specialist.  He favored the 6DJ8 and stated here once that it just did most of the things that a designer was looking for in a preamp tube.

The red-based 6SN7's are supposed to be the best. I had a couple and sold them and I seem to recall giving some to Mike Beaser.  Before you do a Cary, contact Mike (Mikebse2a3).  He once suggested a circuit change to Mr. Cary who thanked him and incorporated it Mike' work into his design.  He is very familiar with Cary preamps and I do believe, still uses one to this day.

Wow... that is an amazing article. Thank you.

I am slightly enthralled with the 5692 version... I've tried many variants including the red base RCA's. they are nice and very fluid, but lack depth of my CBS/HYTRON 5692's

You should be - listening to one right now. And sitting beside are Mr. Wrights 2a3 monoblocks.

Yup, had the 3.5s as well. I needed the cash for some foolish reason. I do like my Don Allen cakepans (6bq5 monos), but am still looking for a nice tube pre. I'm currently using a PS Audio 4.5 that I got for free (not working). I swapped out all of the electrolytics, polys, switches, and pot (was NOT east finding the switches, sourced in England). It actually sounds really nice in straight-wire mode.

I have not.... pray tell, what is the story on them? I don't like buying for rarity sake... but good sound always costs monies.

If any of you boys need 6SN7's, I have a bunch, all tested.  Let me know if you looking for anything specific.

Are you planning on bringing a variety of 6sn7 to Hope? Or is it preferable we have specifics in mind?
