richieb Posted March 16, 2017 Share Posted March 16, 2017 I use and own two Pioneer Elite PD93 from the early '90's. Would Easily compare to anything made since. Big forty pound brutes with both digital and analogue trannies mounted outside the chassis. Stable platter tray where a clam shell clamps down on the disc in the machine. I would post pornographic internal photos of the all copper chassis, copper and gold foil wrapped capacitors, etc. but would likely be banned for such filthy images. Another great machine are those from C.E.C of which I have the 51XR with a belt drive motor. Damn near equal in sound quality to the Elite and all reviews gush over the thing. Bill Did it use that now "unobtanium" KSS-151a laser, too? I used to run some Denon CD players and sold them when new....DCD-1500, 1800, 1560, 2560 and 3300 I've owned....and sold. Only CD player I have now is a Carver DTL-200 single disc from '87 that just sits for decoration as it's signed by Bob Carver. All my CD's are on a music server now. The "5" versions are slightly more audiophile than the "3" version and is better if you dont use external components for conversion. They are more all in one with balanced connections. willland Posted March 17, 2017 Share Posted March 17, 2017 Dave, If your plan is to just play CD's, then get a CD player. SACD's and CD's, then a dual player that excels at both. All types of discs, then an Oppo or Cambridge Audio universal players are two obvious choices. Like I mentioned earlier, if your intended use is audio discs, then a CD player or CD/SACD player is the way to go IMO. Oppo is great and is the "Swiss Army Knife" of multimedia players and performs well with any type of disc . But 9 out of 10 times a quality dedicated CD player will excel at playing CD's more than a multiuse player. I just bought one and it is very impressive. It easily bested an older Sony cd player I owned that had the legendary tda1541 DAC. Good luck on your search. If I wasn't in a hurry I'd have waited for their new unit that will come out in April. The Oppo UDP-205 4K UHD Blue Ray disc player. The guy said it does what the Sonica Dac does in addition to being a Blue Ray player. I'm new to this so what he said went over my head.... Thanks again!
