Best 15" drivers for DBB

Recommended Posts

You can also close off the ports and buy some inexpensive passive radiators.

You can extend the ports at the expense of a db or two efficiency down low.  Two 15" woofers could use more breathing room than 6cf to get real bass extension.

Now if the MCM drivers measure correctly, you'll at least be able to tweak the rest of the way.

I changed the box parameters to 6.3 cu ft and adjusted the port tuning for best performance and I think I found a winner!  First I'll discuss what I found. in many cases I would have to take the advice given and change the port tuning.  The port tuning is noted.  The box is tuned to 42hz so anything else would require modification.  Power handling shown is PER DRIVER, so cabinet power would x2

Power Acoustik (MOFO-152X)   $159  (purchased through MCM Electronics)

Tuning at 24hz, F3 at 24hz

Power (RMS)    1700

Sensitivity   87 dB 1W/1m

Emminence Lab15   $285

Tuning at 32hz, F3 at 31hz

Sensitivity   88.5 dB 1W/1m

Power Handling (RMS)     600 Watts

Selenium 15SWS800   $215

Tuning at 37hz, F3 at 38hz

Sensitivity   93 dB 2.83V/1m

Power Handling (RMS)  800 Watts

MCM Audio Select (55-2953)   $31

Tuning at 36hz, F3 at 40hz

Sensitivity (1W/M): 98 dB

Power Handling Capacity: 200W RMS

Emminence Kappa 15LFA   $125

Tuning at 42hz, F3 at 45hz

Sensitivity   99 dB 1W/1m

Power Handling (RMS)   600 Watts

Emminence KappaLite 3015LF   $200

Tuning at 42hz, F3 at 46hz

Sensitivity   99.4 dB 1W/1m

Power Handling (RMS)   450 Watts

So......with an f3 of 24Hz with a modified tuning frequency and a power handling of 3400w RMS per cabinet, the MOFO-152X looks like a clear winner.  I have 2 QSC CX302 amps that will output 700w into 8 ohms in bridged mono.  I'll run one on each sub.  With a sensitivity of 90db per speaker (2 drivers coupled), I can get

90db = 1w

93db = 2w

96db = 4w

99db = 8w

102db = 16w

105db = 32w

108db = 64w

111db = 128w

114db = 256w

117db = 512w

Two 15's, 6 cu ft, 35hz.

Just thoughts but...

Depending on your priorities and your extension, filtering, and power, you may want a bigger box to flatten the drop, based on the woofer.  Bigger box flattens the bottom and gives a few more db with more port area.  Trade offs.

If I were going to supplement a set of La Scalas, I would be going for the best and deepest bass that can keep up with the La Scala bass horn.  In that size box if given enough power (for home use not auditorium), a set of KLF-30 or even lowly RF7 II woofers :mellow: would be great for a normal house size room.  Lot more money though.

Bought a bunch of stuff from them and I am very interested in the actual measured response of the MCM drivers.  Hope this is a hit a $31.  Probably get run out of the house if I try to build anything else.

I've used MCM and Parts Express over the years with no problems at all.

The reason I'm trying to find drivers for the DBB is because I'm going to have a pair of cabinets passed down to me that several other forum members have used. The cost is free wirh the condition that I don't resell it. If at some point I can't use them I will pass them along to someone else on the forum.

While I have built cabinets in the past, have the tools and the skills to do it, I couldn't pass up a chance to get these cabinets.

I'm moving over the summer and still looking for a house. Top on the list is a media room isolated from the rest of the house. And a wall long enough to put the DBB's in the corner and 3 LaScalas in between. I'm very anxious to get moved so I can set it up. I can only imagine 24hz at 120db.

" MCM drivers.  Hope this is a hit a $31"

When you measure the T/S parameters, you will find them way off (Qts much higher)

They will probably require the box to be at least twice as big as you think.

I have LaScalas for my mains and those go pretty strong down to around 50hz.  I was hoping to use these AS a subwoofer to extend the bass from the LaScalas down lower while accenting the "thump" factor.

I'm going to be moving in June, so I probably won't even get a chance to set these up until after I move. I'm getting them now because the previous owner is moving and needs them gone.

I'll likely try the MCM driver with DSP knowing that I can return the MCM within 30 days.  I wish I could get an answer sooner, but it will likely be mid summer before I get any useful data.

Build a table tuba  , as already mentioned . I have one you can borrow for a few days if you want

pat_in_dfw,

Too bad you weren't closer, I'd let you borrow that and the omni-mic http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-omnimic-v2-and-dats-v2-speaker-measurement-bundle--390-800

It is minus the woofer tester so the two basically amount to the package above.

Careful, playing with this stuff is addictive.

Thanks for the offer. I have a calibration mic already that I use when I set up DSPs in a room. I'm an AV engineer in my real job and speaker enthusiast as a hobby. I normally use the mic with a pc based spectrum analyzer. This will be an interesting addition.

Really appreciate the offer. But with the MOFO-152 having solid response down to 24hz with insane power handling I shouldn't need any more.
