Exactly.  Do you bank online?  I don't.  Do you save passwords on your computer?  I don't.  Do you save credit card information online or on your computer? Nope.  If you keep it off the grid, you are not perfectly safe, but it helps.  Things like credit cards are protected from fraud anyway.  So what if they find Carl's porn collection, they probably already have better.

No online banking.

I enter my passwords every time I log in somewhere (except here).

I enter my credit card every time I use it to purchase something.  I think Pay Pal and Tidal have it stored though.

There's no need to store porn when it's readily available elsewhere.  Heck, all you need to do is google the wrong word and it pops up.

We also tear our names off all incoming mail and packages before we throw them out.  I'm big into shredding documents as well.

You live a lot like we do, and I am glad your goat porn is safe...it means so much to you.

According to 60 minutes NSA and the military use over 75 digit access codes which take years for computers to decipher.

As I have not had to deal with this one, I wonder if the remedy I have used a couple of other times over the years would work.  I always keep a Linux boot disc handy.  I don't keep anything on my system drive I care about due to just these possibilities.  Twice over 30 years I've had a ransomware attack, and I just booted Linux, removed any data I wanted to keep, then restored my system drive from the clone I always make as soon as I've updated my OS.

Not sure why this is so devastating unless folks either don't take basic precautions to back up or these guys have done something entirely new.

How is possible to have things in your computer that you do not care ? Do you have a second pc to store all your family photos, do you purchase anything online at all ?

Even if your banking info is not stored locally, unless you chose so, you still are exposed, a good antivirus and anti-spyware, plus their build in firewall they have you will be fine, as long as you have the latest updates, and have the time to finetune the firewall to your needs..
But its hard to imagine someone in this day and age that don't have some sort of valuable info in their pc.

I use the cloud to store all my pictures videos, not because its more secure but i have tons of pictures and hard to manage them all.

I highly doubt it NSA got hacked, as there is mo way to confirm it happen unless you have an internal access to their security infrastructure logs, besides i could imagine how locked down their access is there, which is super hard to penetrate unless somone internally with high access. I think NSA hacked the shit otta other countries and pointed the finger at some useless russian or chinese hackers, saying shit we got hacked too..

A websites being hacked is one thing classified systems are entire ball game.
All in all you don't know what's true and fake nowdays, and NO I'm not trying to make a political statement, nor do i want to steer this thread in that direction.

That would not surprise me. The NSA actively recruits talented US hackers that are caught and made a job offer they cant refuse. IE Prison or 6 figure government job. The problem though is some of the higher ups dont understand what the young guys are doing and there is definite opportunity to get up to some sanctioned or unsanctioned mischief.

Based on my Network Security class in college, the biggest security threats to any company is internals, you can protect external threats if you put some efforts, but there is no way to protect interal threats, that's how wikileaks thrives..

WAY too valuable to be on a system drive, which will crash eventually even if a virus doesn't get it first.  I use the "Library" very lightly and I use Mirrorfolder in realtime mode to keep it backed up to my NAS.  I uses a 2 disc mirrored local driver for my photos, music, and old files.   It's backed up anytime I am idle for an hour.  I am double redundant on everything important, and triple redundant on things critical.   I have files going back to the mid-80s.

Further, as I may have mentioned, I keep a cloned system drive I can swap if necessary.

I am living evidence that "Experience is a dear teacher, but a fool will have no other."  As much of my professional life was dealing with computers from 1980 or so on, I finally realized by about 1985 that a solid backup strategy was essential.  I've lost some over the years, almost always my own fault.  But not many.  I HIGHLY recommend Mirrorfolder if it is still around.  Mine is 7 years old and I've had no need to upgrade it, so I am not sure.  Extremely flexible, even copies open and locked files.  I keep my email pst file backed up in real time.  It has emails going back into the 90's and being able to access them sometimes is a major help.
