Celebrating 20 Years of Marriage

Married July 17, 1982.  Even though born 7 weeks early on June 5, 1983, the math works.  As older newlyweds, we tried diligently to have a child; taking breaks for meals, of course.

That seven weeks cost Blue Cross many thousands of dollars for 26 days in an NICU.  It was an interesting experience.  As 30+ year-old parents we were the oldest parents visiting the NICU daily.  Often we would sign in under our own names.  The "parents" of many of the tiny -- Johnny Jackson was 1.5 pounds at birth -- preemies were babies themselves.

At 5lb 3oz at birth, our son was a giant among the preemies.  His main problem was he didn't suck; he still doesn't.  I often wonder what became of Johnny Jackson, the Pope-Super twins, and the others?

Speaking of preemies, my maternal grandmother, born in 1896 and died in 1992, told a story about her father, who was 3# at birth.  His parents put him in a shoe box in the oven of a wood stove.  She said, despite prefacing the tale with the fact that the subject was her father, listeners would frequently ask, "did he live?"
