Loudogp250
Hey Community, I have been looking for a replacement for my Technics sa-818 that has been giving me issues with repair cost greater than I am willing to spend. My last two vintage receivers have cost $ to maintain so I am looking to purchase new / refurb with a $700 budget. I have been looking at the following. Emotiva PT-100 + A300 Yamaha A-S801 Marantz PM7005 Marantz PM6006 I use the DAC in my Pioneer N-50 so if you have any preamp suggestions that do not include a DAC I would be ok with it. System includes a U-turn Orbit turntable with a Grado Prestige Blue1, Pioneer DV-45A for CD/SACD playback, Pioneer N-50, Forte ( Bob Crites TI diaphragms & updated crossovers) Any thoughts our suggestions? paul79
One should weigh a couple of things taking this approach. Sonically, your 818 is a tough act to follow. It has substantial build quality that none of the pieces you listed will match IMO. Is it better to have something you can actually maintain vs a new piece that you might not be able to? Tough call. I understand your frustrations. Being that receiver is near 40 years old, a full restoration might be another and better option. That way you don't have to keep putting band-aid's on it. This of course, takes a specialist that knows these old pieces Not trying to tell you what to do. Just giving my thoughts. There is allot of bang for your buck using restored vintage gear. 1
Loudogp250
Thanks for your insight Paul79. I think your input is both wise and sound. What do you think I have to budget dollar wise to match the performance of my Technics?
paul79
I'd say at least $1500. Maybe more, and then you still may not be happy with it. I can recommend one newer integrated amp that is somewhat affordable (used) that I like the sound of. Again, it does not have the build quality, though I would call it excellent by today's standards. It does sound excellent. The Sony TA-A1ES Here
willland
From your list of four, I suggest the Yamaha A-S801. Vintage looking, built well, plenty of power for your Fortes, built-in DAC, well designed variable loudness knob, and of course I really like my Yamaha A-S1000. Loudogp250
Based on paul47 post I decided to search out another repair shop in the area that I will call today. Thinking about giving it another go while purchasing another receiver that I'll use to replace a avr. The Outlaw RR2160 looks like it should be added to my list. @Willand I have read good things about the Yamaha
SilverSport
I had the Outlaw RR2150 and it sounded very nice with Klipsch...you will find several other members here that also enjoyed it...the RR2160 is a bit more power and a touch simpler to use???...good luck with your choice. http://saloon.outlawaudio.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=82&page=1 Bill
mr clean
I have emotiva gear you have listed on your list and I love it! Im not anybody but for a person who loves great sounding music I think you would be very happy. I sure haven't heard everything and I'm sure for a ton of money a little better sound can be had but for the money spent its off the charts.
