Jerrymr1965
Question: The La Scala basic birch 1965 on speakers weighed what 127 pounds. Okay the same era basic birch non-split Industrial La Scala weighed 168 pounds. Same cabinet same trim but why the extra 41 pounds?
HDBRbuilder
Not very sure the 1965 LaScala was built using BIRCH cabinet-grade plywood...much more likely it was built using marine-grade fir plywood, instead back in 1965. Fir plywood is lighter than birch cabinet-grade plywood. Plus, the original LaScala didn't have a 15-inch woofer in it (had 12" woofer, instead) and was shorter than later LaScalas.

Thanks for the reply. Always thought the 15 inch driver and heavier motor structure had a little to do with the weight difference.
Jerrymr1965
While on the subject of the La Scala. Years ago I acquired a pair of birch La Scala's, (apparently the standard model) with AA crossovers but factory Klipsch carry handles on the sides. These do not seem retro fitted. Did Klipsch build such speakers to customer requests?

Yes, if customers requested the handles (after Klipsch started using them on their industrial line), they could get them....or bring them in and get them installed. Jerrymr1965
While on the subject the K-43 serial 67-9116 0074 G1 woofers, ordered as replacements for the K-33 in the La Scala are Eminence or Electrovoice. Thanks for any information. Jerry

Jerry K43 are industrial woofers...can handle more power than the K33, BUT there is a trade-off...for that extra power-handling-capability: They don't perform quite as well as the K33 does. Not sure who makes what anymore, but Eminence is probably who made yours.

JRH
The K-43 made by Eminence accounts for 10-15# increase in weight. Also a spilt cabinet has more wood in it. Sorry HDBRbuilder, but the LaScala started with a 15' woofer from the beginning (1963).

WMcD
I'm not sure that HDBR is not correct. It has long been stated that the LS started as a PA speaker for a political campaign. The "Runt" seems like it would fit the bill more than a classic LS. The Runt most likely has a 12 inch, to my eyeball approximation. CECAA850
Isn't the museum in the process of getting an early Lascala with a 12" driver?

Bill W.
It appears the early Lascala pair from Seattle is the standard 15” woofer bass horn rather than the “runt” version with a 12” woofer.
JRH
WE have the pair of LaScalas! One on display and one needing a little veneer love. The LaScala debuted full-size with a 15" woofer. The very rare "runt" version came shortly thereafter with a 12". Some of those were used by Bob Heil as monitors for Jeff Beck.
