Refinish -Oak Oil

Hybrid100

Recommended Posts

Hi Klipsch Community-

I have a pair of Klipsch speakers from the late 80s to early 90s and the finish labeled on them is Oak Oil.

If possible, I would like to refinish them to match my black stained living room.  For now, my wife will not allow them in the house.

Does anyone happen to know this particular finish and how I could best go about stripping them?

Thank you!

Brid

You may not need to strip the finish. Watco Danish Oil comes in ebony. Test it on a spot on the bottom to see if it takes hold. Chemical strippers will not remove the existing finish since oil finishes penetrate the veneer's grain. You'll have to sand off the the old finish only if it's necessary to change the color (ebony should cover anything) but veneer is very thin and the potential to sand through it is real while trying to remove the oil oak finish. I would test your color on the bottom before and after a light sanding/scuffing to see what you're into.

If you apply the ebony danish oil, finish with a furnture wax and you'll be good.

If it is an oil finish and nobody tried to put a hard drying finish on them, most oil stains will go over top and penetrate.  Light sanding might be a good idea, particularly if there are scratches.  There are ebony/black stains such as Watco and Minwax.

It's a shame to cover the real wood veneers if they are in good shape.  A clean up and enhancement with a nice oil covered with tung oil might make the wife happy when she sees the deep luster.  If scratched, for sure go with black.
