vasubandu,

The CF-4 is like the holy grail of speakers.   I've been waiting to see a set of those come up for sale since 2011

You see lots of 2's a few 3's.....I saw a set about 7 years ago.....was picking up a set of Chorus II's...He had a set of CF-4's  for sale at the same time.

I had my wife with me.....She gave me one of those "Don't even think about it looks"....thought about buying both pair.

I decided after to seriously pursue a pair......Still haven't found them....2's....3's....but never 4's.

Good luck.......

George

@oldred I have more irons in this fire than you could count.  I have people promising me that they will have one for me within a month.  When they come through, I will PM you with all that I find after I get one.  These really do seem to the holy grail.  Fortunately, not too many knights got the call to search for it.

Small world that we are both coming across the same CF-4 in France.  If one were reasonably priced, would you import it from the US?  I really do have many people who have promised me a pair, and I may come across several.  Happy to share what I find if it will do people any good.

OK I am now officially pissed.  It takes a lot to piss me off, but I am way over the line.

I finally find a website that is supposed to have not one but two pairs of CF-4 for $550 apiece.  I am searching only sites for the last month, so a little excitement mounts, and I go there.  I don't see the price, but I do see that wonderful BUY NOW button.  And so I click it, certain that my odyssey is over.  But all the happens is the page reloads.  IN fact everything I click just makes the page reload.  No contact information, nothing.  And they have pictures of tons of other gorgeous speakers all with their own BUY NOW button. Check it out.

On one, I noticed that it had parts of a story about a Russian buying it originally, and I did a google search with that sentence.  And I found the guy.  Called Volti Audio and he does impressive restorations.  At least I like it.

So this site seems to collect stuff and publish it for some sick reason. And part of me knows that those CF-4 are out there waiting to be bought.

Oh yeah, here are the CF-4.

I thought it was odd when you said you had a source for multiple CF-4's.

No, I actually have spoken with a few people who said that they probably could deliver 2 pairs in the next 6 months.  TMRAudio.com said that they move stuff in and out and get them.  I am on their list to call.  And a few others.  Something will happen.  It can wait because I need to get my client to pay up, get your speakers and then get my Marantz.  That Outlaw 7700 is insane.  It weighs 93 pounds. I am going to have to figure out how to connect everything.

The CF-4 will come when it comes. I have a feeling it may come from Canada because a scary percentage of the sales I have identified were there.

For what its worth I did listen to the CF-4's that were for sale years back, he had them set up for demo when I bought his kV-4 center from him. I was running Chorus II's at the time and didn't think a 2-way was worth considering back then. I remember having to do a double take as I was not expecting I what I heard from those things, they sounded really good, surprisingly good in fact. I have no doubt they are right up there with all of the big boys, probably besting most.

Wow, what are they worth?  Talk about an unanswerable question.  Last year, a guy in the middle of South Dakota put up a pair of CF-4 1 for $400 and a pair of CF-3 i for $300.  I went crazy trying to get them, but just could not get there so I told everyone else here to get them for themselves.  Someone did, but I cannot remember who.  A pair sold in Turkey last year for $3,200, and pairs can bring over $2,000 in Europe. Last year a guy in Phoenix agreed to sell me his original pair for $900.  But as we worked out the details, he became more and more regretful. I could tell from our communications that he really did not want to let them go, so I finally just told him that if he had changed his mind, I understood and it was perfectly fine with me.  I thought the guy was going to cry and he tried to give me money for letting him out.  They are very special speakers, and they were special to him.

The best source I know of for used prices is hifishark.com.  It is incomplete and unreliable because many were not sold, but it will tell you something.

The risk is that parts are not available.  No one has them.  Depending on the version, I am going to guess $600-900 would be "value," but you might be able to get more. If you would ship, try audiogonusa.com and hifishark.com.

I would love them if we could figure something out, but I just finished my system with an Optoma UHD-60 4K projector.  In the end, I found that my favorite speaker was my CF-7 center.  So I had a guy swap out the 1" tweeters on a pair of RF-5 for the 1.75" from a pair of CF-7, which gives them the exact same components as the RC-7. My surrounds are RS-7 and the back surrounds are 2 more RC-7.  Sort of an RC-7 love fest.  I would tear it apart for some CF-4, but it still feels new to my wife.

Here are the Hifishark.com solds.  If I can help you in any way, let me know.

Obviously what someone is willing to pay. I spent two years hunting down a set of CF-4s V1 or V2. Found mine in near mint condition - cabinets pretty perfect, a small hole in one of the speaker grill cloth. Simply I doubt a nicer said would have ever been found. The more years go by the harder it is to find them undamaged for obvious reasons. So ... Epic CF-4, first problem. Earlier versions, second problem. Mint, third problem. Weight, fourth problem. Money is not the problem - it is foolish to whine about the $700 pair that got away; that's for people who's time is worthless. I was lucky as mine came with extra woofers in the box, and extra upgraded horns in the box. Honestly I would not let them go for less than $2,500. And I doubt I'd sell them even then. They are spectacular. Diana Krall, Peel Me a Grape, simply drops one's jaw.

That said, I had a similar story. When I went to buy mine, the guy was in a beautiful house. He had a room where he had his audio stuff - pretty empty room at that, and in a large house. He had purchased smaller speakers and was rationalizing how good they were (he wasn't bragging or anything, but one could tell he was trying to convince himself). His wife didn't like how the CF-4s looked in the room. Mind you it was a music room with not much of anything else. He hemmed and hawed, said he had to sell them but didn't want to. Told me he'd buy them back if I ever sold them, and stick them in the basement or something where she wouldn't see them. No lie it was like he was selling a child.

And hooked up to the Dynaco-based VTA120 amp I built with KT88s pushing these CF-4s, I now understand. I'll take good care of them. Promise.
