Anyone Here Think Really Loud?

The 'loudness' of our thoughts affects how we judge external sounds

Quote

"...auditory imagery will decrease the sensitivity of actual loudness perception...that is, after imagined speaking in your mind, the actual sounds you hear will become softer -- the louder the volume during imagery, the softer perception will be..."

Ha! Yes, I must admit I let the voice in my head be louder than person talking to me. It works the other way, too. A louder sound source will take over my bandwidth. Sometimes that’s preferable as you allude to lol.

So  . . .  if you imagine dad screaming "Turn down that gosh darn music" you perceive the music as being actually turned down.

Of course then you have to turn it up.

Then the real dad asks you why you turned the music up so loud.  The teen says, because I imagined you were yelling at me to turn it down.

Dad walks away perplexed.

This explains a lot of teen behavior
