New chapter in my life

So after working at the same retail jeweler for almost 20 years, last October I put in my notice and quit.  Lots of reasons why I wanted to leave that I won't get in to.

Fortunately I was at a point that allowed me to not work since then.  I have to thank my wife for stepping up and going from a part-time to a full-time position where she works.  She just happened to be accepted for her new position the last week that I worked.

I'll be 43 in May.  Mid-life crisis?  Maybe.  I've been able to spend a lot more time with my family, including my Dad who just turned 86 and is in poor health.  Also was able to visit my father in-law almost every day at the VA where he was recovering from major back surgery for a couple weeks.  Had the opportunity to spend two weeks in Mexico visiting my sister who lives there.  Also have been able to spend significantly more time in a volunteer work that I love to do.  I've completely eliminated any and all stress in my life.  I had no second thoughts, nervousness or reservations about leaving my job.

I've been looking for a new job that will allow me to balance time with work, family and the volunteer work that I do.  I think I found one that will be perfect.  It is evening office cleaning.  Some may say that it's a huge step backwards from the Senior Sales Associate, Appraiser, Timepiece Specialist and everything else I did where I used to work.  I see it as a step forward.  I went from great pay to no pay to 1/3 pay if I get this job.  You know what?  I'm way more excited about it than I was looking through all the Monday - Friday 9-5 jobs out there.

If any of you out there are in the same situation that I was, give some serious consideration to doing what I did.  I won't ever regret what I've been able to do the last 5 months and look forward to what I'll be able to do in the future.

I can relate. I chose to work nights which allowed me to be with my wife and daughter at the most important times of the day. I come home at 7:30 whip up a quick coffee and "breakfast" for my two favorite girls and see my wife off to work while I take my daughter to school. Something about walking with her with her little hands in mine. It's only a short walk but I love it.

Sometimes wife and I get to have lunch and off to sleep I go about 1-2pm. Then back up at dinner with them and off to work I go.

It's hard on the body but it's worth every minute to be with them. My whole point is FAMILY FIRST. Guys at work want to go out and see an NFL game etc but you know if I had done that I have missed my daughter first rolling over or other milestones. They always have come first.

Sounds like you are done with people, I have those days quite frequently.

I laugh as I have another twelve years to go and only if you knew what TYPE of people I have to deal with. Comedy, horror and the weird. Wife says "How was your day honey?" Not exactly dinner conversation so I'll reply "uneventful". It's better that way. Really.

In the next 4 or 5 years I plan on getting an entry level job somewhere and getting out of management.  Basically something to occupy my time and a place where I'll never have to worry about being responsible for anyone's job other than my own.  Can't wait.

Good for you Wuzzzer, now this evening when you see your better half kiss her.

There is much more besides work, you probably have more good memories from the last 5 months than from the last 5 years.

No one has ever said on there death bed "I wish I had worked more"

Dealing with the public is one thing, managing employees is a whole different problem.

Can you believe it??????

Even crazier, they let me in,  after years I escaped, after they burned me out with 80 hour work weeks. And dealing with 70+ employees plus the public. Went into business for ourselves for the next 20 years, which was much easier.
