If it doesn't play high-rez audio, DVD, Blu-ray, 4K disks or stream then I don't really have a use for it in the application we are discussing.

Oh come on Zen, a little misguided humor always helps a thread.   I have a 3 or 4 players as well and of course they all aren't Oppo's and never would be, but for the rack in my media room, it does and for the same reasons that I have a McIntosh amp in it instead of some much lessor piece. Everything is relative and I firmly believe that each and every needs to follow their own path.  Now if I could just swing that new Marantz or Anthem Pre-Pro, I would feel like a full blown audio fascist,

You are on a roll!  Now if only some would come to understand the difference between an audio fascist and an audio socialist, they just might understand that there is a difference between fascism and socialism...

The audio fascist is the pretentious neighbor who doesn't understand why you don't buy the expensive component he is recommending even though it costs more than you made last year.  The audio socialist thinks everyone should buy Bose and wonders why audio engineers don't compress the music more to get rid of those nasty dynamics.

I agree and don't understand why my opinion didn't go over so well.  I apologize if anyone misinterpreted my comments as not appreciating humor and will next time add an emoji to those that need further clarification for their approval. ^_^

I guess that is why I don't fit in here because I don't identify with either camp.

I’ll be ordering a 205 within the next week.

With the high demand after the announcement Oppo is already out of stock of the 205 and getting low on the 203. I am not sure but I believe Oppo will continue production until about June.

If you wish to buy one you probably should jump at the chance when and while you can.

:( I am mourning the lose of another great leader and contributor in the industry that has supported my hobby. I spoke with a rep a OPPO today, and the feeling was somber there as well. unfortunately lay-offs are coming soon. And they are not located in an area where you can "get by".

The 205's are all gone, and none will be manufactured at the next production run either. All other resellers and outlets supplies have been exhausted, or are filling backorders only. Eventually a lucky few may get crossed off the waiting list. There were about 30 units of the 203 remaining at Oppo directly, and so I put in my order to help drown my sorrow in shiny new gear. I never bought a new Oppo before, but with every single HI-FI review outlet having one in their test set-up, I personally have sat on the fence looking over long enough. I already own several cheap plastic Chinese players. Regardless of price, I can live with this purchase with ease.

I do not have a 4K TV, or any 4K disks, but that is not what I want this player for at this time. I have no available high speed internet 5Mb's, so streaming 4K is out, and I really do enjoy owning a library of digital media in physical form.  I have personally collected approx.1000 old books in a reading room, so why not physical media? Most of my books are 100 years old, and several are nearly 200 years old. My oldest disk is less than 30.

The 203 is a better buy...

An alternative for those who want a fine digital transport that uses the same MediaTek platform as the Oppos.

You're absolutely right. Its very difficult for a company to operate in a niche market. And your younger crowd comment is also spot on.

My 30 something kids look in amazement when they see LaScalas' let alone the Jubilees. They think I'm nuts. My daughter, who is a professional and makes damn good money about fell over when I told what some of my gear costs. It's all about convenience, the sophistication and branding of the product. They have cut the TV cable cord and use Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, etc. When we watch the Grandkids I have to call her to figure out how to watch the darn TV. Damn youngsters - Get Off My Yard ?!?

I think the other issue is most younger people who are into HT systems are at least casual gamers and as such have an Xbox ONE which has  a built in 4K player. Why pay extra for very incremental improvement especially now that the XBONE has bit steam audio.

Oh yeah and...

The 205's are gone. There are none anywhere.

I don't get paid until the 10th, which means the 203's will probably be all gone too.

I've found one other player that has RCA outs, which is a must if you're running tube gear.

Most have a digital coax out, which outputs in PCM -- but I can't find a decent DAC that converts to stereo analog. The two I found are junk.

I'm not happy.

@Deang I hope this helps. Please Contact the Magnolia department at BestBuy. Call them direct, as  their internal server goes to the BB warehouse where the 205's are in inventory. My local BB has a new 203, and can get a 205 in one week.

As far as the production run, the determining factors are OPPO needing to keep parts for service, and whole units for exchanges. The suppliers are ringing oppo's neck here, and increasing the cost of new orders so severely,  it has put Oppo in this corner where they want another production run of 205's, but do not want to be left paying over cost to cover future claims and long term, having parts available for all long term owners is a very good thing to have around. When the parts run dry, it really is over.

Dean first I highly recommend MHDT Labs DAC's for excellent stereo analog music. Beautiful sound which brings together the best of digital and vinyl. I own two an MHDT Havana and a balanced MHDT Stockholm

BTW, I've heard a lot of bad things about the sound of the Sabre DAC in the Oppo 205, for stereo analog it supposedly has a very overly bright sound. I have never heard the Oppo 205 I am just repeating what I've read.

This is the balanced MHDT Stockholm

Also Panasonic has what looks like a very nice flagship blu-ray player that they may soon bring to the US market,  the Panasonic UB9000 .

Here's a quote from Gary Reber of ''Widescreen Review'':

''According to a conversation I had with a representative of OPPO, they are shutting down because of rising prices from parts suppliers, causing an unacceptable increase in the cost of production.''
