That goes for many musicians, and movie stars, went to see the Eagles a few years ago it was great except for the 15 minute political speech in the middle.

There's no place for politics in sports, concerts or speaker forums.

It amazes me how many people complain about political speech but then don't care who is elected....Btw, Rock-n-Roll IS an excellent art form to express free speech politics and it may be the reason you guys don't understand Peter Gabriel and probably don't appreciate a lot of the artist I like.

Man is a political animal.    Aristotle.

Wasn't that back in the day when the  concept of "idiot" was established? I heard that word's etymology stemmed form folks who couldn't talk politics.

he's easy to understand.  He simply is not as profound as so many others, such as ELP or King Crimson and many others.

Cold and misty morning, I heard a warning borne in the air
About an age of power where no one had an hour to spare,
Where the seeds have withered, silent children shivered, in the cold
Now their faces captured in the lenses of the jackals for gold
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there

Suffering in silence, they've all been betrayed
They hurt them and they beat them, in a terrible way
Praying for survival at the end of the day
There is no compassion for those who stay, yeah
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there

There must be someone who can set them free
To take their sorrow from this odyssey
To help the helpless and the refugee
To protect what's left of humanity
Can't you see
Can't you see
Can't you see, yeah

I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there

To heal their sorrow
To beg and borrow
Fight tomorrow

Step inside! Hello! We've a most amazing show
You'll enjoy it all we know
Step inside! Step inside!

We've got thrills and shocks, supersonic fighting *****
Leave your hammers at the box
Come inside! Come inside!

Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Left behind the bars, rows of Bishops' heads in jars
And a bomb inside a car
Spectacular! Spectacular!

If you follow me there's a speciality
Some tears for you to see
Misery, misery,

Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Next upon the bill in our House of Vaudeville
We've a stripper in a till
What a thrill! What a thrill!

And not content with that,
With our hands behind our backs,
We pull Jesus from a hat,
Get into that! Get into that!

Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
We're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside
There behind the glass stands a real blade of grass
Be careful as you pass, move along, move along

Come inside, the show's about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
Greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll, oh

Right before your eyes we pull laughter from the skies
And he laughs until he cries, then he dies, then he dies

Come inside, the show's about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll, oh

Soon the Gypsy Queen in a glaze of Vaseline
Will perform on guillotine, what a scene, what a scene
Next upon the stand will you please extend a hand
To Alexander's Ragtime Band, Dixieland, Dixieland

Roll up, roll up, roll up
See the show

Performing on a stool we've a sight to make you drool
Seven virgins and a mule, keep it cool, keep it cool
We would like it to be known the exhibits that were shown
Were exclusively our own, all our own, all our own

Come and see the show, come and see the show
Come and see the show
See the show

Said the straight man to the late man
Where have you been?
I've been here and I've been there
And I've been in between

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

I'm on the outside looking inside
What do I see
Much confusion, disillusion
All around me

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

You don't possess me, don't impress me
Just upset my mind
Can't instruct me or conduct me
Just use up my time

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

Said the straight man to the late man
Where have you been?
I've been here and I've been there
And I've been in between

Cat's foot, iron claw
Neurosurgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door
Twenty-first century schizoid man

Blood rack, barbed wire
Politicians' funeral pyre
Innocents raped with napalm fire
Twenty-first century schizoid man

Death seed, blind man's greed
Poets' starving children bleed
Nothing he's got he really needs
Twenty-first century schizoid man

I didn't realize this was a contest. 🤑 I won't comment on the lyrics you posted because if you think they are more profound then I have no desire to change your opinion. It makes no difference to me if you prefer those to the one I've chosen for the topic of this thread. That said, this song was written in 2002 and I think it shows we've actually taken it to a whole 'nother level given the REALITY TV phenomenon that has hit the USA.

But I digress.  Peter Gabriel is SO profound.

Yes he is!

Let's go

One man at the window
One girl at the bar
Saw that look of recognition
When they know just who you are
I seen you on the tv
I seen you on that show
You make the people crazy
And then you let them go

Before the show we calm them
We sympathize, we care
And the hostile folk we keep apart
'Til the red light says on air'
Did you see our leather lovers
All tied up to the chair
Did you catch those child molesters
No one else goes there

What a show, the Barry Williams show
What a show,
Dysfunctional excess
Is all it took for my success
The greater pain that they endure
The more you know the show will scored
It's showtime

Got the reputation of a surgeon
Cos they cannot feel the cut
It looks so very simple
But it really is an art
They call our studio the hospital'
Making money from the sick

We let people be themselves
There is no other trick

My lover stole my girlfriend'
I keep beating up my ex'
I want to kill my neighbor'
My daughter's selling sex'
My s/m lover hurt me'
My girl became a man'
I love my daughter's rapist
My life's gone down the pan'

What a show, the Barry Williams show
The Barry Williams show

Dysfunctional excess
Is all it took for my success
And when the punches start to fly
The ratings always read so high
It's showtime

That girl has got no scruples'
Not a wrinkle on her face
You would not believe the plot she conceived
So they'd let her take my place
Well, no man is an island
No man is a sea

But this display of emotion
Is all but drowning me

What a show, oh what a show
On my show, the Barry Williams show
It's my show
What a show
Dysfunctional excess
Is all it took for my success

The best tv you've ever seen
Where people say the things that they really mean
I hear my name, I hear them roar
For the one more time I take the floor

Just one more Barry Williams show
We're gonna take you where you want to go
It's showtime

Come on down
Come on down

Captain Obvious is usually not considered profound.

In 2002 I'm pretty sure no one thought a Reality TV Show host  would be POTUSA and especially this one. {Not a political comment as much as a "Captain Obvious," rebuttal. :)} Btw, I'm not sure who this character is except in who the words portrays him or her to be.

This where someone has to say:  C'mon man!

I agree.

Peter Gabriel's Melt (iii) is his best followed by Peter Gabriel Plays live.  Maybe his early Genesis stuff after that.  Then (iv).  It takes a while to get to the 80's stuff (pretty much like any bank, the 80's were dark times, they were.).

So And us are good too...

Just don't have to listen to the hits..

And if your a Gabriel fan....

You would know it's one of his

Most artistic...

And is part of a trilogy..

Robert fripps  exposure

And Daryl Halls sacred songs

I was using "profound" in a sentence.

Gabriel wrote some good lyrics:

At the top of the stairs, there's hundreds of people,
Running around to all the doors.
They try to find, find themselves an audience;
their deductions need applause.

The rich man stands in front of me,
The poor man behind my back.
They believe they can control the game,
But the juggler holds another pack.

I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.
I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.

I'd rather trust a countryman than a townman,
You can judge by his eyes, take a look if you can,
He'll smile through his guard,
Survival trains hard.

I'd rather trust a man who works with his hands,
He looks at you once, you know he understands,
Don't need any shield,
When you're out in the field.

But down here,
I'm so alone with my fear,
With everything that I hear.
And every single door, that I've walked through
Brings me back here again,
I've got to find my own way.

The priest and the magician,
Singing all the chants that they have ever heard;
and they're all calling out my name,
Even academics, searching printed word.

My father to the left of me,
My mother to the right,
Like everyone else they're pointing
But nowhere feels quite right.

And I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.
I need someone to believe in, someone to trust.

I'd rather trust a man who doesn't shout what he's found,
There's no need to sell if you're homeward bound.
If I choose a side,
He won't take me for a ride.

Back inside
This chamber of so many doors;
I've nowhere, nowhere to hide.
I'd give you all of my dreams, if you'd help me,
Find a door
That doesn't lead me back again
Take me away.
