Padding the speaker baffle / motor board ?

For appearances I am contemplating padding the baffle, stretching a faux leather over the padding then installing the driver would this affect driver performance sound ?  I have seen several models of speakers that  place felt or foam near a tweeter / mid range (I have no real idea why ?)  I am thinking with the vinyl like material stretched over the padding I should avoid a lot of absorption  of highs etc..

Anyone have any suggestions, Advice ?  Thanks  Joe

Depending on the material, the width of the motor board (and if it is flat) and the drivers that are being mounted on it, the change may affect the frequency response.  For woofers and bass, not so much unless heavy thick padding, mids and highs it depends on the treatment and if you are talking horns vs domes.
