There is a now known off-gassing issue related to the insulation. It's what causes the copper to turn green and sticky. When it gets bad enough, it will increase the overall insertion loss of the system (adds resistance).

thanks for the info.  my wires still look & feel good... the caps still sound good as well, im sure an upgrade would benefit them but for now they will stay in stock form.

There were different batches of wire. Some were good, but many had the problem as described by Deang.

Hi, I'm not a technician but I have someone who can assemble an AK3 crossover for me. I found the kit for the capacitors but I don't know the values of inductors and resistors, or rather everything that is missing beyond the capacitors; can you kindly tell me how many inductors and resistors there are and where to find them?
Thank you very much
Giuseppe

More detail would be helpful. Are you rebuilding an existing pair or a new pair?

The schematic doesn’t have the DCR values of the coils, and even if you had them, you would not find exact matches, especially for the coils in the high pass section. You also need the T4A autotransformers. I stock all of these Klipsch parts.

How experienced is your assembler? This is not an easy build.

Hi. I want to build a new pair of AK3s divided into two parts, one for the woofer placed inside the box and one external on the head, like the original AK3s. I found the capacitors at Critesspeakers, I am missing the rest. I do not know what T4A autotransformers are, please let me know what you can give me to complete the kit and at what price. My assembler is very good, but I have to get the components because he does not have time to look for them. I think in the USA it is easier. Let me know.

Many thanks

Best regards

Giuseppe

You write English very well. What country are you in?

1) What year are your Klipschorns?

2) What parts did you buy from Michael (Crites)?

You do not need to split the network. All parts will fit on one board. This method is simpler and actually preferred.

Hi, I live in Italy (Veneto), in a little village in the province of Vicenza, close to Venice, among vineyards of white grape. I have been in USA (California) many times for holidays. Unfortunately I am better to write than to speak!
You see me in Klipsch Forum  as a “new member” because I lost my account and I was not able to recover it, I’m an old member even if I write a few times, I like to read your topics.
Around twenty years ago I purchased from Mr Bob Crites, very kind person which I met on Ebay, a lot of Klipsch components. My Klipschorn were assembled by my woodworker in Italy. At that time I found an AL3 crossover, but now I’d like to built a AK3 in two parts (impossible to find an original) because I want to exploit the original input terminal tray.
So far I have not yet bought the Type AK-3 Rebuild Kit from Michael Crites because I want to be sure to find all components for the AK3.
Let me know for the components, thank you very much
Kind regards
Giuseppe

Since the AL3 and the AK3 are almost identical, an easy thing to do is...

1)  Remove the 4mh inductor and both 68uf capacitors from the AL3.

2)  Buy a 100uf capacitor.

3)  Make a small board with the following layout (reuse the 4mh inductor) and mount it to the inside of the woofer door.  Wire as shown.

4)  Connect "To High Frequency Cabinet" to AL3 Input.  Leave the woofer output terminals empty on the AL3.

5)  Enjoy!  Any double checking of my idea is welcome 😎

Yes, I should have clarified. If someone buys a third party design that uses a different low filter, then those components are bypassed or removed.

If building from scratch and they don’t exist - I wouldn’t bother with putting anything in there. You can get all of the parts on a single board.
