Well, for what? 

 

If a speaker was designed without internal damping, adding it will change the cabinet tuning, making the woofer "think" the cabinet is larger.  That will produce a ripple in its response at its lower limit and increase bass output a little below that lower limit.

Not necessarily.  It can also work against the bass output and over damp.  Maybe extending but at a lower lower level but likely relative to the overall loss.  Different types of enclosure types will yield different results.

 

In general though I agree.  Use what was in there or test other damping material.  Everyone has their own hot buttons and maybe more damped bass, depending on position and room may suit you.
