Don McPhee
According to some a weak point in the cw3 is the mid driver. Some have suggested a better option would be a selenium 405 driver with horn. Has such an attempt been made???...if so what was involved and more importantly what was the outcome sonically. moray james
the weak point in a CW3 is not the mid driver but the mid horn. A larger horn is what it requires.
Don McPhee
Thanks for the correction. Is the cabinet deep enough to handle a new motorboard and a M2380 horn?
pzannucci
Cornwall depth 15.5” Take off about 3" to be safe so you are likely looking at a tight squeeze at 12.5" though if you put the horn on the exterior, you could get around 13.5" If the M2380 and D405 together are around 13", you could give it a try. I absolutely love my Cornwall III's and do not find either mid or tweeter horn to be deficient in any way. ..But if you do, then buy a different speaker. ..Lord knows there's hundreds to chose from. I can understand swapping out components in a speaker that's out of production. But the idea that one could improve on a current design is something I can't quite fathom. The designer who chose the drivers for the CWIII had the benefit of lots of testing equipment, an anechoic chamber, blinded listening trials, etc. By comparison, what does the tweaker have or know that the designer did not as they embark on deconstructing what is a proven and successful design?s I would guess that the chances of screwing things up is far greater than actually improving it's performance.
MEH Synergy
I was quite content with the Cornwall IIIs I had. I agree with not swapping drivers on a current production pair of speakers that are that expensive. What don't you like about them? Start there. Frzninvt
Trade them for La Scala's if better midrange is what you are after or build some Corn-Scala's.
MEH Synergy
Trading for LA scalas will cost you double. Cornscalas are going to send you down the path perhaps of infinite tweaking and always wanting to try something else. I'm not interested in that pathway. Current production models sound great right out of the box IMO.
