JL Sargent
After all attempts at opening the safe are exhausted, I would do this to get the contents out: Lay the safe on it's back. Drill a 2" hole in one corner of the bottom of the safe. Insert a 8 ga nibbler into that hole and cut a hole big enough to pass contents through. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Decker-No-8-Heavy-Duty-Sheet-Metal-Nibbler/264095673376?hash=item3d7d542c20:g:UVgAAOSwlkFb1iUs:rk:9:pf:0

I asked him about that. He said the battery was already too low and he couldn't open the safe. His only option was to change the battery with the door already locked and closed.
Marvel
They should have a totally mechanical way of getting it open, short of angle grinder. That's just crazy.

I have an AMSEC (American Security) safe about the size between a Forte and Cornwall that weighs around 500 lbs. and took three people, a pickup truck with a 3 ton strap attached to the hitch and wrapped around the safe to slowly lower it down basement steps. Safes have several ratings and those rated for general consumer use are indeed “toys”. Most gun safes purchased at retail are RSC rated - residential security container - meaning it will take an intruder at least 5 minutes to gain entry. Enough protection to keep an average dope head with a screwdriver and hack saw from gaining entry but that’s about it. Those that are prepared will peel that safe open like a banana. Get a safe with at least a TL 15 or 30 rating.
mungkiman
If it hasn't been tried yet, turn the handle clockwise. While keeping pressure on the handle, enter the code. After the beeps, turn the handle counterclockwise and (hopefully) open...

Max2
No Canon safes have a key backup for security reasons. Ask you son if he remembers using the # sign at the end of his old code. I would give this a try with the factory code
