Gun safe failure - need help (resolved)

My assumption is since the safe was working until a simple change of battery, someone who understands how those things work should be able to very simply restore it to operating condition.

This cannot be the first time ever that this has happened.

This safe has no key backup ?

There is no physical backup.

There are safes of this type which have the old rotary dial, then an electronic keypad.  This one has no other way to input a code other than the keypad.

The Canon company has offered to send him a new keypad but for some reason that will take two weeks.

Damn.  What if there is a revolution and the poor guy can't get to his guns?

Trust me, he's well prepared for the zombie apocalypse.  I would not enter his home without knocking first.
