A First, Who knows Oris Watches ?

Hello All.  A first for me someone sent me a message offering a trade.  They asked me if I would be interested in an Oris Divers 65.  I know NOTHING about watches but I do know anything of value can and will be faked.  How Rampant is the counterfeit market on these watches ?  I certainly would not ship B-4 receipt of the payment.

I told the potential buyer / trader I would needs pics and a serial number

Is / Are there tell tale signs I should look / watch for (No Pun Intended)

I appreciate the input..............The offer is an Oris Diver 65, Black 40 mm with 20 mm Lugs

I have spent the last hour looking at pics back and forth. I used Ebay sold as I figure anyone buying a 1K plus watch will leave poor feedback should they get a fake. all the Pics on both down to the bands and the holes in them look the same. The Serial Numbers are styled the same.  Close scrutiny of SEVERAL sold watches and Hi Rez Pics of the offered  watch I can not find anything Odd out of place when comparing them, The wife agrees she could not see any oddities

Im thinking I am safe, the watches seem to sell regularly in the 7 - 900 area

Most Jewelers should be able to pick a fake correct ?

The problem with pics is that doesn't always guarantee that you're getting the watch that's pictured.

Here's what I learned in my 20 years in the jewelry industry as a Rolex specialist:

When you buy a watch online there's four possible outcomes.

1)  It's completely fake

2)  It's stolen

3)  It's a frankenwatch made of some real and some fake parts

4)  It's legit

How much of a gambling man are you?

40mm if fairly small by today's standards. Most of my watches are 43-45mm and have 22 or 24mm lugs. A few mm Might not sound like much but I don't think there is much of a used market for 40mm men's watches if resale is an issue....and the way Joe flips things I'm betting resale might be an issue.:D MSRP on mid-level watches is pure fantasy. I'm not trying to be snarky with "mid-level" just trying to help. I'm familiar with Oris but not that particular model. If the seller is saying it is a $1K watch I doubt any single in the history of that model ever sold for $1,000. Nothing wrong with KG 4s but we all know they are not Khorns. Now when you change brands to something everyone know like Omega, Breitling, AP, Cartier, IWC, Patek Philippe (2nd mortgage on the house), Panerai, etc. You can easily spend 5 figures if you try. Discounts have dropped a lot in the last 10 years or so. 15-20% was once common; it is now very hard to come by. About 10% max if buying new. For the record you notice I left out Rolex from my list. They are a watch for people that don't know watches, have a bunch of DI and want to impress others whom don't know about watches. That was meant to be snarky. Actually there are a couple of decent Rolexes, but you never see them on fat, old, white guys at the casino. They are in the hands of collectors :P. But I digress....

There are fakes for many, many watches but with the Internet and bit of searching they are pretty easy to smoke out with just a bit of work. WatchUSeek is a good place to start.

If anyone ever needs/wants a nice watch at the fairest price you will ever get, call George Meyer at Govberg and tell him Rich from Maryland sent you.  Don't talk to anyone but George. https://www.govbergwatches.com/

Hard to believe what you can spend on an Omega or TAG or Breitling and not even going in to the Uber models.   Kind of makes a set of Jubs look like a friggin bargain.

No kidding. I gasp at my friends $6K cartridge on his 10K turntable but have more watches than I do arms and legs. My Omega needs service and it will cost more than an entire shelf of Blue Note 200g 45RPM LPs.

If you want something unique, well built AND affordable checkout the Helberg line from H2O https://www.h2o-watch.com/helberg.html You won't see another on a wrist anywhere....unless you are at a watch geek convention.

Hah.  Every watch in my drawer needs a new battery, beside one Auto I have.

I like watches, but honestly would never wear one unless I am having to wear a suit.

To each his own, but you wont catch me thinking, "Boy, Im going to get some enjoyment out of this watch!"

I think this guy might and he probably spends a good bit of his day looking at his watch....which is ok, but don't hit me if I think its funny.

If I buy a wristwatch, I buy it at the authorized dealer.

If second hand, then from a person whom I know and has the watch from new.

I opted for a Seiko automatic and of course did not want to spend a fortune. So I bought a cheaper model but original with certificate and all.
