Crew Dragon and the Shape of Things to Come

What a beautiful ship! Half the price and off the ground first compared to Boeings Apollo 2.0 effort. Of course, still glad to have the Boeing Starliner coming as we can't have too many crewed spacecraft options. Crew Dragon 7 person capable and with printed engines, no less. It was, and remains, ground landing capable but Elon has decided that since NASA really doesn't care SpaceX won't develop it farther and will concentrate on Starship. As with the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy Lift, Crew Dragon is largely just another step toward his goal of reaching Mars sooner and in a bigger way.

Starship has paying customers for a 2023 lunar circumnavigation. They will have a LOT of room and many windows to view the sights from as it's designed for up to a 100 passengers. It will be interesting to see if Musk pursues use as an Earth point A to point B ship. Certainly possible but it's also not core business as, unless it generated a LOT of money really fast, wouldn't get him to Mars faster which is his focus. Of course, other investors such as those pursuing Hyperloop may do so. The two big players there are moving along much faster than anticipated. NBC News reports that Virgin Hyperloop One hopes to begin testing full-sized hyperloop systems in 2021 and then to build hyperloops in the United Arab Emirates and India, among other countries. The company is also conducting feasibility studies for routes in Missouri and Colorado. Musk’s Boring Company has received a permit to begin excavating a possible hyperloop station in Washington, D.C. And Hyperloop Transportation Technologies is carrying out a feasibility study for a hyperloop linking Chicago and Cleveland and is considering routes in Europe, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.

Right now, the first system looks like it will be in India. It will be designed to be virtually on demand in that the main tube will have units moving at speed at all times and when one is summoned the nearest one will move into a siding tube for the pickup. This will greatly increase efficiency over any existing or currently being developed mass transit concept.

Lower labor cost, less government regulation, oversight and safety regulations his possible motive for doing it there?

However, the main motive is that India will soon be the number two economy after China, perhaps the number one. They are building a massive new airport at Mumbai which will be served by this line. No particular reason to presume the Indians are not as serious about safety as we are, and they are flush with money and big on new ideas and advanced tech. Heck, we don't even have high speed rail which is rapidly becoming obsolete.

=== a recent vacation put us through Houston where we visited NASA and met with a cousin recently hired there. Had a great behind the scenes tour, visited the Mission Control floor and spoke with the ISS Flight Director for 20-30 minutes. Saw several Boeing, SpaceX mock-up prototypes with the ISS full scale mock up. Damn cool tour with pretty much a run of the place. It is sad though with the state of the facilities being far what one might consider “space age”. To the contrary it is more like its original build from the 60’s or before. As we all know and is easily seen funding is surely lacking.

And Houston is SO far from Beaumont............................

=== we were on an Extremely tight schedule. And you would have been working anyway, well, you would have at least been in the building. And I’ve never met a Rottie I didn’t get along with. Good doggie —

I'm sure I could have snuck away for lunch.  BTW, I didn't think that old retired farts had schedules.

Otto is funny.  If there's a gate between you and he, he'll try to tear it down to get to you.  If he's in the same room as you all he'll want is a belly rub.

My dog is the same way. Nobody, but NOBODY will enter my yard even if I am escorting them unless I hold her. She's only 105 lbs, but as a long haired German Shepherd she looks much bigger and it all stand out when she is barking as Carl said through the fence. However, she's never bitten anyone and wouldn't except to protect me. She is well trained and won't leave the yard even if the gate is left open.

Since we've been married my wife and I have had one Golden Retriever, two Newfoundlands and two Rotties.  Otto is the only dog that will stop in his tracks and haul butt back when he gets out of the gate and is summoned.  A couple times he's gotten out and we were unaware.  All I had to do was go in the front yard and holler his name as loud as I could.  You'd see him sprinting back home from one end of the block or another.  All the other dogs needed search and rescue parties to retrieve them when they got loose..
