KG 2.2V k1008 woofer damage question

What is the purpose of the gold colored basket on the back of the woofer?  Those have broken off the woofer itself along with A large magnet.  I removed them and the speakers still produce sound as i believe there are two magnets.  Is it safe to use without them??  Is that just shielding because this was a center channel?

They're called bucking magnets.  Like you suggest, it's shielding that allowed the speaker to be placed close to an old tube style tv without causing harm to the tv.  There's no concern with modern panel tvs so they're really not necessary anymore.

The V in the model # indicates that they have them.

(I don't believe the magnetic field actually causes harm to a CRT beyond diverting the electron beam from its assigned pattern, which distorts the image being generated.)

It will if it's left there long enough....like a few weeks then it's semi-permanent damage.  One could always degauss the damage but, then again, who really owns a CRT tv these days with speakers next to them.  Usually they would realign themselves after a short time but if you kept the speakers far enough away, there was no problem.
