Upgrade phono stage or cartridge?

Upgrade turntable poll

5 members have voted

  1. 1. What upgrade has the biggest impact on sound quality of a turntable (for the same amount of money)?

    • A better cartridge/needle
    • A better phono stage

This is a poll about upgrading a budget system. What path is the best one to increase sound quality?

They both affect the sound quality, so only one or the other isn't going to give the best sound quality. With that being said, phono stages are usually pretty good over a certain price point, but a bad cart will not only sound bad, it can damage your records as well. Therefore, I would choose a better cart first.

Just to clarify, I was thinking not of replacing a 'bad', old cartridge, but rather upgrading to a higher quality one.

I have not had a bad cartridge in decades. I have had good cheap Grado carts. SS phono stages I have not cared for in 20 years. Rather have a modest cart and tube phono stage. Modest tube phono by Bellari always sounded good years ago.

That looks like an excellently useful piece of gear.

The Parts that transform energy from one type to another make the biggest difference.

I'd go along with that notion.  Transduction is harder to pull off well.
