digital out to receiver

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've visited here... I'm sure I missed a lot of potential knowledge, but I don't think I'll go back and read all the posts I missed.

ANYWAYS, I have a question. I already asked it down in the Sound Cards forum, but I think I should ask it here since you guys probably have more knowledge about this particular case.

My soundblaster live! value has a digital out which is in the miniplug format (same as discman or whatever else).

I want to run that to my receiver. Now obviously I can't convert the digital miniplug out to an optical out, which would have been perfect, but I was wondering if I could use an adapter to convert the miniplug into digital coax.

I was doubtful, but someone told me that I could just use a regular MONO miniplug to RCA adapter from Radio Shack.

cable http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F002%5F004%5F005%5F000&product%5Fid=15%2D1519

my question is simple: would it work?

thanks y'all!

My good Seb, never trust the obvious. I do believe that these links should work for you. I would call the dealers and explain to them what your application is before you buy anything. I had a very boring conference call and I new these things existed from a past article in Stereophile.

Good luck and enjoy!

http://www.minidiscmall.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi - click "home" then "accessories" do a search for "optical plug adapters"

The first link is more confusing, but it may be your best choice paired with a toslink cable. You have to find out if the second two links are two-way cables, meaning mini-plug to optical and/or optical to mini-plug.

Okay foget using the above first link. Instead go to www.minidiscmall.com and click on "accessories" on either the side or the bottom of the home page. Then you will have to go through all of their accessories (you know, the whole "next 20 matches thing"). On the last page there is a product called "Optical Plug Adaptors" with product code M4121. That should be your ticket. I am not too sure about this site's reliability, it seems a little questionable. I would contact them and get model numbers and go elsewhere.

A mono mini-plug to coax adapter will work. If the digital out from the Sound Blaster has the same content as the digital out from a DVD player your reciever will convert it to audio and it should sound good.

thank you guys!

i think I'm going to go with the Rat Shack miniplug to coax method, as the only reason to go with optical would be that I wouldn't have to unplug my dvd player from my receiver.

but i figure, hey, I'm not going to use the PC on my ht that much, and unplugging and replugging a wire won't be much of a problem compared to moving my pc every time...

I'll let you know if it works.

Playing games like this should be fun.
