Turbonated
I don't know what to do. I currently have a 3.1 setup and I wanted to go for a 5.1. I have no idea where to mount my new bookshelves. Help please! Here is my living room looking to the left, right, and a full shot of the couch.
JohnA
Mounted on the back wall will work just fine. Set level with a sound meter.
Paducah Home Theater
5.1 surround speakers go on the side. Given your room situation I assume the main listening position is the couch where the stairs are on the left. If so, being right up on the wall isn't the greatest place anyway especially since there is nothing to mount it to to the left of the couch. They need to go on the side walls facing that couch, like to the right of the lamp. I can't tell what's to the left of the stairs though but based on what little I can see it should be pretty straightforward.
