Considering Used Modified LaScalas

Hello,

Tempted to maybe pick up a pair.

1. My room is only 20' x 12.5' x 7'. Too small?

2. Seller lists for $3,000 (gulp!) and shows updates:

tweeters: B&C DE 120-8

mids: Electro Voice K-55-M

bass: not sure yet.

crossover: Sound Type A-4500

internal wiring: AudioQuest

nice looking speaker wire posts (not sure of make)

Are these good mods?

3. Again, $3,000!? Cabinets are NOT nice looking ... looks like black paint. Fair price?

Are they local to you? If so, wait it out. Right now they are over twice what they are worth. He will have to come off that price or decide not to sell. Check back on occasion. But, keep looking. Those are not bad upgrades (I had to say that, I've done similar). Would really need to see the cabinet condition.

Be patient.

you should know that you can no longer get replacement diaphragms for the K55M. Time to walk away from a very over priced set of loudspeakers.

Yeah, probably best to walk away. Price/condition and need for further updates probably is too much to get past even if he does come down on price. Unless it is a typo and he meant to put $300!

There are ways to replace the diaphragm on the K55M (see Crites website) but probably not worth the extra effort.

I do encourage you to keep looking though. I love that LS sound.

Yes, 3,000.00 should get a pair in excellent condition. With nice wood.

The mods are nice. Rough painted cabinets put these in the sub 1,000 range for me.

And your room is really too small. Cut out some 25” x 25” cardboard and place them  on the floor. Pull out about a foot from the wall.

Look how they dwarf the room. And see what listening distance works out as.

I sit about 10’ from mine. Some feel they need to to 15 - 20’ away from  you.

Other than ceiling height, the floor area is fine. In a room that size, they will work best on the short wall. Mine have worked well in even smaller rooms. Finally have a 21x23 with 10.5 foot ceilings and they are really working well, but I only have them about 8 ft apart.

You can often get nice first gen LS between $800-$1400.
