Looks like the grill snaps onto the retaining ring ... These are noisy. There is a reason why SVS puts foam behind them on the top, port end of their subwoofer. They also put silicone on edges of the screen to keep it from vibrating. I had to do all this when I built a clone as it was really, really noisy.
mike stehr
My older CS 16/46's had those goofy metal grilles, and all they did was buzz and vibrate. So I tore them off. To keep critters and dust out, I took panty hose, and covered the bottom of the ports.
jason str
There are places that will make custom grilles such as >this<. Just grille under the squawker. You could router a round frame out of plywood and staple cloth of choice over it. Any full service lumber shop could whip up a frame as well, just measure.

They left to a hotel after a couple days as they didn't come to America on vacation to follow someone else's rules. They came to do whatever they want. Not in my house, sorry. glens
But not so much difference at higher volumes? At any rate, could you imagine snipping the grilles above the center mount points and rolling the metal back 90 degrees across the top? DizRotus
I prefer the look of the Klipsch metal grills used on HIPs (2nd photo) but gave up trying to locate some. Eventually used PE grills sealed between motorboard and woofer, rather than surface mounting with the supplied ring. .
MEH Synergy
Your substitution looks great and I would agree.
