If you ever wan't to get inside the head of a tortured soul suffering from depression, extreme shyness and a general lack of desire to live(don't we all?) then just slap this puppy on. Just him, his acoustic guitar and one piano melody(on the song Pink Moon only) on the entire album. Recorded just before his death to boot. The most melancholy album ever in my opinion. PINK MOON I saw it written and I saw it say Pink moon is on its way And none of you stand so tall Pink moon gonna get you all It's a pink moon It's a pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon. I will not try to recite them, for the most part. Some titles may be wrong. The first few are hits. - - - - Stairway to Heaven by L.Z. They make little sense, but seem to convey some intimate story and understanding. In view of its obscurity of meaning, how come it was such a hit? I bring it up because I can't figure out why it works. - - - - Best love song, by far: "If I Loved You" from Carosel (sp) Rogers and Hammerstein. A song at first meeting, speaking of anticipation of pulling back out of fear, yet also obsession. - - - - - "These are Days" by 10,000 Maniacs. Very forward and joyous. - - - - - - "America" and "Officer Crupkie" from West Side Story. Cynical and entertaining. The whole thing has continuing appeal. I like the RCA modern compilation of cover songs, "Songs of West Side Story." Buy it, you'll love it. - - - - - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as sung by Lennon in the acoustic demo on Beatles Anthology. There is an extra verse. Pensive and insightful. We hear John's personality here more than on any other Beatle song. - - - - Bonny Raite singing "I can't make you love me". (gently) Turn down the bed, Turn down the lights, Turn down these voices, inside my head. Morning will come, And I'll do what's right, But give me to tonight, To give up this fight. Cause I can't make you love me if you don't You can't make you're heart do, something it won't. Haunting. - - - - - Metalica's "Nothing Else Matters". The best ballad of devotion and determination, rejection of critics of the relationship. - - - - I put two songs in the same nich because they may have been written for the same reasons. Essentially, a gifted song writer has been rejected by their true love. It seems to me that they lament the ending, want to show who is more noble, and who has more talent. The last two are a bit of, understandable, pride. They do it well. "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" written by Steven Stills for Judy Collens. "I will Always Love You" written by Dolly Parton for Sam Tillis. - - - - - - A private favorite is Nantucket Sleighride performed by Mountain. The song of a whaler. -- - - I'll think of some others. The first house I lived in was three stories tall on a long flat street where the houses are no more than 15 feet from each other. The city haddn't yet cut down the trees lining the street between the sidewalk and the curb. They did later giving the reason that it was too costly for upkeep. Anyway, in that same house my room was a remodeled part of the attic. You know, the kind of room that looked like an upside-down "V" with the pitch of the roof? That is where the JBL L300's resided. So here is 'Patterns' from "Parsley Sage Rosemary & Tyme".... The night was set softly with the hush of falling leaves. Casting shivering shadows on the houses through the trees. And the light from a streetlamp leaves a pattern on my wall. Like the pieces of a puzzle or a childs uneven scroll. Up a narrow flight of stairs, in a narrow little room. As I lie upon my bed in the early evening gloom. Impailed on my wall my eyes can dimly see. The pattern of my life and the puzzle that is me. From the moment of my birth to the instant of of my death. There are patterns I must follow just as I must breathe each breath. Like a rat in a maze the path before me lies. And the pattern never alters until the rat dies. The pattern still remains on the wall where darkness fell. And it's fitting that it should for in darkness I must dwell. Like the color of my skin or the day that I grow old. My life is made of patterns that can scarcely be controlled. Also, in his song Crying, he doesn't even need words to get the point across- its all instrumental... I like them. Pink Floyd Van Morrison Sting Testament Dave Matthews Blue Man Group These are some of my favorites. I think the lyrics are what greatly compliment the above bands. IMHO. It doesn't take much to assemble an adequate band, but it takes a lot to write good lyrics. And it takes even more to convey them properly. Like i've always said....
