usnret70-90 Posted February 16, 2020 Share Posted February 16, 2020 (edited) Yesterday(2/16/20) I purchased a pair of Klipsch RF-7's knowing ahead of time that they were in need of new woofers, grills and veneer. I purchased them because of the price and I enjoy having a project to work on in my workshop. So, could someone in the Klipsch Community tell me where to find (4) new woofers and (2) grilles? I'm aware that the K-1089 woofer has been discontinued but, are there other replacements available? I thank you very much for any help which you can give me. This speaker has a dustcover it is just inverted and matches the cone. The color of the dustcap will not noticably affect the sound. If you are concerned with the cosmetics we can add a black dustcap to this woofer but I would need to know the size and material required. We might or might not have a suitable dustcover. That was a copy and space response from someone on that website asking about using rf 7 II woofers in an original RF7. I am ASSUMING that that would have a larger circumference. Router indeed. I found four new woofers at the Speaker Exchange in Tampa, Florida stock# 1064791. Actually, the woofers are replacements for the RF-7III model. I will have to do some routing and changing the screw holes which will allow the woofers to seat properly. Total cost was $661.00 for the (4) woofers and they came into the store in just three days. The gentleman I dealt with was Wayne Davis and he is definitely a speaker specialist. I paid $225.00 for the speakers, so that brings my cost to $886.00 so far. Many thanks to those who welcomed me to this forum. I can tell by all the different posts that all of you are very serious about your music and speakers and I will enjoy being a participant. usnret70-90 Posted February 24, 2020 Author Share Posted February 24, 2020 This is the diagram I was given by Wayne at the Speaker Exchange in Tampa, Florida. I used it and it worked perfectly for the (4) new RF-7III woofers which I purchased. They told me that the original RF-7 and the RF-7II woofers are no longer available. I used a Dremel tool and a very small carbide grinding bit to enlarge the woofer mounting holes. If you use a drill bit, it will enlarge the hole too much and you will end up using a washer because the head of the original screws will fall right through. The holes actually need to be enlarged on one side only, which is why I used the Dremel. I used the same bit for routing out the MDF so that the woofer would seat properly. I actually did all (8) by hand and after sanding the high spots, all four woofers fit perfectly. This was actually very easy to do. I am closing in on 70 years old and I've been diagnosed with Parkinson's. I had one of my carbidopa levadopa pills and a couple brews to calm my shaking hands down and I think that I did quite well. I have taken pictures and will post them as soon as my wife gets home. I'm just learning how to use this laptop. The speaker project is complete.........almost. While putting the three pieces of foam back in each cabinet, I wasn't exactly sure where the foam was supposed to go. When I purchased the speakers all of the foam in each cabinet was laying in the bottom and blocking the two bass ports. Plus, when installing the HF horn I I was not sure which way to align the throat since there are two ways to do that. Anyway, I just completed putting new cloth on the grille frames and it is looking good. I'm still waiting for my wife of 40 years to come home from her shopping excursion and then I will put up the photos. Have a great day!! Regardless of that, I do have a few questions and I'm hoping that some kind soul will help me out. As I mentioned in a previous post, where do the three pieces of foam go and should they be attached with a little glue/staples? In which direction should the HF horn be attached/aligned since there are two ways to do this? Last question: The four speaker terminals on the back have solid wire being used for the jumpers. Is it normal to use solid wire or should the jumpers be made with stranded wire? Any help at all would really be appreciated. Sorry, but I do have another question. Am I in the right place to be posting these questions? This is all new to me and I don't want to be doing something that I shouldn't. Are you on a Windows PC, Mac, or phone? If Windows PC, you can right click the picture and choose "Open With" then choose MS Paint where you can edit the size. If Nac, I'm not sure. There are lots of apps for resizing pics for both Android and Apple. I use "Photo Resizer" on my Galaxy S9 if I'm posting from mobile. On all speakers I've ever had where there were those solid brass jumpers, or whatever they are, I got rid of those and used actual speaker wire between them. CECAA850 Posted February 25, 2020 Share Posted February 25, 2020 If you look down the throat of the HF horn you'll notice that the area of the horn closest to the compression driver has 2 straight sides at the beginning of the flare. They should be oriented vertically. Use speaker wire to make jumpers from the LF to HF terminals. Not sure about the foam. It's been quite a while since mine have been apart. Leave one side stock while you work on the other one so that you can see the correct way everything is oriented. During my twenty years of active duty I thought everybody was a "nice guy" until the day a new recruit sucker punched me in the mouth, breaking my jaw and knocking out four of my teeth.
