hornsofplenty
Hi all, We're assembling a sound system for (for now) one-off dance-orientated events – consisting of 6 Klipschorns and a pair of Klipsch MCM 1900, not for using all at once but in different combinations depending on the scale of the event and the venue. Our choice of amp for now is the Lab Gruppen C10:8, with which, for example, we could drive all 6 Klipschorns (or more or fewer), or the MCMs with two channels bridged + up to 4 Klipschorns. We could also pair the MCMs with a dedicated amp and crossover, but wonder if we do that at a later stage. To complete a basic setup we know we need either an analog dividing network or a DSP (for example, the Ashly 4.8sp), to split into as many channels as we need before going into the amp. This could get into analog vs digital, preserving purity of signal etc... and we're also looking for a solution that can work for different configurations, as mentioned, at least to get us going. What do y'all recommend? Thanks in advance!
Chris A
You've got an 8-channel amplifier, as I read on your Lab Gruppen C10:8. A DSP crossover having 8 outputs and however many inputs (independent channels) that you have from your preamp(s) would provide maximum flexibility. You could drive all 8 channels simultaneously and choose the number of input channels and which loudspeakers get which preamp output channel with the DSP crossover. This will provide maximum flexibility and safety (each output channel has a fast limiter that can save drivers from overloads or limit short term heat build-up). The limiters take mere seconds to set. This all assumes that you've already got passive networks for the MCM 1900s, then you have everything you need with one DSP crossover. If you need active crossovers for the MCM 1900s, you'll need a separate 8-output-channel DSP crossover for them (as Klipsch recommends) and another 6- to 8-channel amplifier. I'd actually recommend a Xilica XP-4080 or 8080 if you have the budget in order to get very transparent operation with an inaudible noise floor. If you're cost-constrained, then an Ashly 4.8SP or even a miniDSP 4x10 HD which is probably the same cost or less as a used Ashly 4.8SP. hornsofplenty
Thank you Chris! We're seeing a used Xilica can be copped for around the same as the Ashly – appreciate the recommendation. Any other forum members care to comment on Ashly vs Xilica? As for analog splitters/distribution networks, and dedicated analogue crossover for the MCMs (ours didn't come with a crossover), are there options on that side if we wanted to forgo digital processing? PrestonTom
There are a couple of Xilica s on eBay right now. If you perform a search, you will find crossover schematics for MCMs. There are also a couple of (good) guys on the forum who can assemble something for you. Marvel
You will have far less flexibility if you go the passive route and may end up costing you more a s you acquire enough correct passive crossovers.
Delicious2
No experience with Ashly but the 2 Xilica XP-4080s I have are very quiet and good sounding. There's just no substitute for the control and resultant sound you can get with active.
