Been thinking about smaller, monitor style self-powered speakers. I’ve read several pieces on this but to clarify - source to preamp(as normal),  preamp to speaker ? Using preamp as volume control to speakers?

I've not done it in a long time but I seem to recall that all the "guts" are typically in one speaker and you go from your source to that main one with the guts via RCA L/R. Then there is a small-ish wire from the main speaker with the guts to the other. I seem to recall the volume control is on the speaker or wireless remote.

@richieb There's probably more than 1 way this can be done but your way sounds like a correct way. @rplace 's explanation is also valid I would think if the stereo amp is in 1 speaker and the other is a "slave". If each speaker has an amp then preamp left to one and preamp right to the other. Preamp volume would be main level control but each powered speaker may have a "gain" control like power amps sometimes have.

This particular model has each speaker L/R powered, each individual driver. DSP room control, time delay etc. Not sure about volume but appears it is done through a preamp.

Oh fancy Nancy:) Which brand/model are you looking at?
