La Scalla AL4 Info Needed

Recommended Posts

There’s something a bit confusing here.  These appear to be the last year of the 1st generation La Scalas, and are called AL4.  The latest model of the La Scala II is called the AL5.  Then what’s the designation of the earlier La Scala IIs, the 2006-2019 model?  They are post-AL4 and pre-AL5.  That doesn’t make much sense.

Also, the “owner’s manual” is a leaflet that includes the La Scala and the Klipschorn, and mostly just covers the unboxing instructions.

the Al-4  1 piece cab  is not  a Lascala II , it's an AL4 .

the LS II  series models are all 2 piece cabs ,  tagging on  the k-77  Tweeter , but they also carry the designation AL-4

the AL-4  series can be a 1 piece or 2 piece cabs , but the 2 piece cab adds  the Designation LS II ........so an AL-4 LS II .

the AL-5  is now a series of it's own with the Celestion tweeter ......it is no longer an LS II  , the  AL-4 LS II  stopped when the K-77 was phased out .

I don’t think the AL5 comes with a Celestion tweeter.  It may no longer be a K-77, but the Celestion K-693 tweeter is part of the Heritage Jubilee, not the La Scala AL5.

here you go , the tweeter is the   Celestion CDX07-1075 .....K-771 1"  Polyimide  . ,used on both the AL-5 and AK-6  as a replacement for the k-77  ,it  is an OEM tweeter ,  matched with a Klipsch lens /phase plug   , an amazing little  tweeter designed for line arrays  ......109dB

To add a wrinkle to the discussion, in this 2009 thread, Bob Crites talked about tweaks to the AL-4 and AK-4 networks.  Bob called the modified crossovers AL-5 and AK-5 but maybe these were not the official Klipsch names?  Maybe they should be called AL-4v2 and AK-4v2.

Read Bob's comments carefully.

Both the AL-4 and AK-4 had resistors in the low pass tweaked when they went to two piece MDF build of the LaScala (LaScala II), and the sealed back Klipschorn. Those networks became AL-5 and AK-5.

Did Klipsch refer to them by those names?  Seems weird to have a La Scala 2 with an AL-5 crossover, then 10 years later, come out with a La Scala AL-5 with a new tweeter.

nope

-the AL-4 network relates to a Lascala AL-4  mated to the k-77

-the AK-4  network  is for a  khorn    mated to a k-77

-the AK-5  crossover is  for the AK-5 Khorn  with enclosed backs  - and a k-77 tweeter

-the AL-5 crossover is for the AL-5  Lascala using a Celestion tweeter

-there is no such thing as an AL- 5 network  for the  AL-4 Lascala with the  K-77 .

-the khorn AK-6  network is  for the khorn AK-6  , it uses the Celestion tweeter

- the latest  Lascala  crossover and Lascala model designation   will always be 1 numeral behind the latest khorn 's crossover and model designation -

The AL-4 was used in the original La Scala build for short time. When they went to the MDF build, they went to the AL-5. I mean, I was in Indy when they introduced it, and Mark Kaufman talked about how they had to mod the network -- which I thought he called the AL-5.

So, did they make a silent change in the AL-5 network when they went to the Celestion tweeter, and just continued to call it the AL-5 with a revision number on the board?

Information originally provided by Jim Hunter and Mark Kauffman of Klipsch Audio Technologies,
LLC

May 2001 The Atlas PD-5VH (Current version of the previous K-55-V) is modified slightly and
christened the K-55-X. The various components of the K-77-M tweeter are either
retooled or sourced from the new owners of the tooling and assembled by a third party.
This variant of the tweeter is designated the K-77-F. An entirely new network (AL-4)
was created to accommodate these driver changes. Fusing is eliminated in favor of a
polyswitch for tweeter protection. The tweeter on the La Scala was flush mounted for
the first time using "Z" brackets. A metal input panel with binding posts in a bi-wire
configuration replaced the traditional screw type barrier block.

December 2005
The La Scala II debuted as the first "finished" version of this model featuring a two
piece veneered cabinet utilizing 1" MDF instead of the traditional 3/4" plywood. The
AL-5 network was introduced to compensate for the improvement in low frequency
response resulting from the change in cabinet construction. The HF and LF cabinets
stacked together using thick rubber isolating spacers. Finish variants were reduced
from 6 to 3.

April 2006
The horn portion of the K-77-F tweeter was re-tooled to include a recessed flange
eliminating the need for the separate "Z" bracket and attachment rivets, the new
designation is the K-77-D. This also allowed the updating of pre-Z bracket La Scalas
(prior to May 2001) to flush tweeter status without motor board modification.

2005 Klipschorn for comparison:

Dec 2005: The Type AK-5 network was introduced to compensate for the improvement

in low frequency response resulting from the addition of a horizontal wall seal to the top

of the low frequency cabinet. The style "B" cabinet was discontinued by the elimination of

the inset "intermediate collar" and visible "woofer top" panel in favor of a 3/8" gap between

the cabinets. The long standing angle brackets, hanger bolts and wing nuts used to attach

the HF and LF cabinets together were replaced with thick rubber spacers, on the LF cabinet,

indexed into recesses on the HF cabinet.
