Srinath
The woofer is moving, so I know its not stuck, and has nice surround. The bass bin XO section looks clean, fuses are not blown, no connections seem broken and nothing looks like magic smoke has escaped, in fact the bin smells like fresh cut wood - though worth a check with a meter. Anyone Had a bass section just stop working ? Worse yet - The spade connectors to the woofer are soldered on. Is that standard ? Did someone get in and screw up something. Coytee
Is it moving because you're pushing it or is it moving electronically?? I don't recall, is there a fuse for the woofer bin?? If so, did you check it?
Srinath
Fuses are there and they look fine - not ohmed out yet. Its moving when I move by hand - not with power - cos it making no sound.
CECAA850
Disconnect the woofer wiring and check it with an ohm meter. Put one lead on each wire with the meter set to ohms and tell us what it reads.
Srinath
Woofer's soldered in by default ? How on earth do you get it unsoldered - Looks like its on a piece of cardboard - I even take an iron to it, looks like it will burn to a crisp like my thanksgiving turkey last year. Srinath
OK I guess I cant blame the PO - ok so how to get it outta there ? Hopefully I'm not taking the woofer out of the bin. Just desoldering - Oh wait de soldering the other end is easier I'd bet.
Khornukopia
First thing is to test or replace the fuse.
jason str
Disconnect the woofer and touch ends to a 9 volt battery and see if the cone moves.
Srinath
Yea gotta get the tester out and check it first.
carlthess40
What’s your location ? Maybe someone close to you that has the test gear could helpSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Srinath
I am near Columbia SC but I got the equipment - I just work at the speed of molasses - cos I have other stuff to swap it to and I have to get it out of the corner its been crammed into etc etc.
Davecv41
Don't touch the woofer with a soldering iron. Instead, disconnect the wiring somewhere between the woofer and the crossover. Then take a resistance reading of the woofer there.
OO1
ok so like Davecv41 and CECAA850 Suggested , the crossover is at the rear of the khorn right under the K55V ---------look at the crossover --locate the WOOFER wires , unscrew both wires , and connect to the ohmmeter leads , they should give you a resistance ---------by selecting OHMS , if the woofer is damaged the reading will be under the nominal rating
OO1
IF YOUR OHMMETER SHOWS NO READING THE WOOFER IS BLOWN -
Srinath
Anyone have a XO schematic for the one on the back side of the panel. I have 2 large caps and 1 inductor - no markings that I can see, and No way to take it off and examine it cos there's too little wire. All the ones I am seeing has only the inductor shown. Its a 86 with AK2 XO in the hat. I also found a wire from the woofer terminal to the VC hit the woofer frame but it was only 1 of the leads not both. Seems to be not have had a spark or any arcing though I am putting electrical tape on the woofer at that spot.
Srinath
I ran the amp straight to the woofer. No sound. I'll likely desolder the woofer and ohm check it - but likely its blown. Is it a speaker that can have a VC replaced ? Is that the better option - I'd like to keep it original. Mainly because it also has to match the other one - which means - well I could buy a matched pair.
Peter P.
A minor point: You only need to disconnect ONE woofer lead from the crossover to measure the resistance. Done this way, you won't accidentally re-wire the woofer out of phase with the other woofer. Also, you could put a voltmeter, set to AC Volts, onto the screw terminals going to the woofer. As you play music you should see the number bounce around. As you increase the volume, your meter reading should increase. If you're not sure what looks like a properly operating crossover, compare the suspect speaker to the working one.
Wirrunna
AK2 schematic attached. The schematics are here - https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/113804-klipsch-crossovers/ Replacements available from Bob Crites - https://critesspeakers.com/prices-other_stuff.html
Srinath
I cant find my meter yet - But I'll start on them shortly. But I am pretty much resigning to buying new woofers anyway.
