Having an issue getting best sound out of my Chorus II with Yamaha 2030

Recommended Posts

Ok,

I need some help.  I bought an awesome pair of Chorus II with Crites Ti Diaphram upgrade and crossover.  I went and heard them demo'd before I bought them and they were awesome.  He had a NAD 1155 hooked up to a Bob Carver Cinema Grand 5x200 amp running 2 channel.  It was awesome and the bass was amazing and there was that punch expected.  He demo'd this amp as I have the same one at home.  I get the speakers home and hook them into my Yamaha 2030 and Bob Carver Cinema Grand 5x200 and the top end is great.  Mid bass and down is just not there.  I usually run RF 7ii's set at large and run a R-112SW and this system is dialed in and it sounds awesome in 2+1 listening.  I've run the RF 7ii's in large or small and set the crossover at 50.  Plugging the Chorus II's into the same setup and the base just isn't there.  I've tried turning off the sub in my settings and trying to change the crossover to give the Chorus II's as much bass as possible.  Done large and small setup.  It's as if the Yamaha receiver won't just let me run 2 channel without EQ-ing out the bottom end.  I just want this receiver to run them both large and run the entire sound spectrum.  I know these speakers rock.  Any help/advice on this receiver would greatly be appreciated.  I'd hate to have to run a sub with these speakers.

Start simple, get just stereo running without all the other stuff through the Chorus's.  Large, then work backward from there.  Make sure all the eq is out of the way and running bypassing the electronics.  Then try to add the rest of the stuff.

If you can't get them sounding good, sounds like the 2030 settings are at issue of positioning (due to the rear passives).

Another possibility, they do not have the extension of the RF7's and with the RF's and sub combined, perhaps you are too used to the old sound which may be bloated on the bottom end.  The Chorus kick but are more balanced than what many people are used to when adding a sub into the mix.  Just some thoughts.

Maybe check to see what the output voltage is from the Yamaha preouts and the input voltage of the Sunfire.  Probably a long shot but maybe not matching well.

"Compare the specs.
And many other testers support the fact that Yamaha AVRs are known for weak voltage outputs from their pre-outs, (much better with their surround processor, the CX-A5000).
That's why when pairing a Yamaha AVR with an external amplifier, its best to choose an amplifier with a gain of 32db or so (vs. the THX standard of 29db).
Otherwise you may not be getting full output.

Pzannucci,

Thanks for the advice.  I'll try stereo and work my way back.  If I hadn't heard them earlier that day with my same amp and that NAD 1155 Preamp, I'd have thought the RF 7ii's and sub were what I am used to.  With the same amp I run and that NAD 1155 it rocked and the sub kicked hard.  It was amazing.  Just trying to replicate the same results.  I'm thinking it's time to move on from an A/V receiver and go to a Processor.

Willand,

Great information here.  I've got the matching Sunfire Theater Grand Processor III.  It's been sitting here.  I think for  my 2 channel stereo room I'll use this along with my Sunfire Cinema Grand 5x200.  My record player and CD player will work fine with it.  I have a newer Apple TV and they got rid of the Digital Sound output and went to the HDMI only.  Piss poor design.  That's why I went to the Yamaha 2030.  If I can figure a way to get my Apple TV to run through the Sunfire Processor, I'd move the 2030 to my bedroom an run satellite speakers and a sub.  Thanks for your help.

You could use an HDMI audio extractor like the following and then hook the optical to your Sunfire TGP

PZannucci,

I ended up finding a fantastic deal on a NAD 1155 PreAmplifier in near mint condition for $100.00.  What a difference it made in 2 channel.  I'm running a CD Player and a Record Player and this PreAmplifier gets out of the way and let's the Cinema Grand Power these speakers.  My low end thump is back.  It's amazing how good this NAD PreAmpifier works.  I'm going to start doing research for a Processor with XLR's for my 2 channel listening room.  Right now I've got these Chorus II's and the Carver Cinema Grand 5x200 connected to this NAD 1155.  I can barely turn this volume knob up a quarter of a turn before it'll drive me out of the room.  These Chorus II's sound like I've got a sub running with them.  Just curious, do people run 2 channel and a sub as well.  With these speakers, I feel no sub is needed.  I took my tablet with Tidal downloaded on it and connected it to the NAD 1155 with an 1/8" to stereo LR and I've set the gain volume with the NAD 1155 and use my tablet to control volume.  I've cancelled all weekend plans and will be sitting in this room admiring the simplicity of this setup.  Whatever Processor I do decide on will have to out perforrm this NAD 1155 to get a spot in this room.  These processors have their hands full.

If don't run them a sub you won't miss it - if you run them with a good sub you then go without  you will. You can't really go back once you heard it. I run my with a revel b15, love it.

no wonder  , the Carver puts out 200 Watts per channel , that's 2x the power rating of the Chorus speakers , which is just perfect
