Bottlehead SEX 2.0, uses two 6DN7 tubes for a total of 2 watts, very quiet and also functions well as a head amp.

Holy cow. I just ordered one of these kits, today. I haven't built a kit since 1969, and that was a HeathKit transistor amp, but I've got a pair of KG3.2s, and have been entranced by everything I'm reading about SET amps. I'd love to hear about your experience with the S.E.X. build and listening. All the best. (And this is my first post, here, too. Ha! Amazing to be a Noob at 71 years old.)

I have both the SEX 2.0 and 2.1, they are very fun to build, the step by step assembly instructions are almost moron proof. The sound quality is fantastic! I have demonstrated the amps in over a dozen audio shows and they always receive great reviews. Some advice, read the assembly manual before starting anything, and take your time building the amp, you do not need to set any land speed assembly records. Build the amp in stock form first, use it for a while then add the C4S board and or change the caps. You will be very surprised how nice two watts sound. As a headphone amp they will power most power hungry phones. For additional info please check out the Bottlehead forum. Later on you can build their Moreplay preamp. There is a saying, "music sound better when you build it yourself", the quote comes from Dan the CEO at Bottlehead.

George, the amp is a Mystere IA-11 made by PrimaLuna. Uses EL34 power running in Pentode mode, and 6SN7 preamp tubes.

( I notice your in Stoneville, NC. I live in Huntersville, NC north of Charlotte.)

Thanks for the tips. It's been a long time since I've built a kit, so I'll be proceeding very deliberately. It's all about the journey, not the destination. Also, it seems like my best listening times, lately, are after the wife is in bed, so sound levels have already been low, for the most part, though, there are still those occasions when I really want to hear the rumble of the bass pedals on a pipe organ, Jimi Hendrix wailing like mad, or some crazed academic percussion album from the '60s... 😂 All the best, and Happy New Year to all.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got a couple new amps over the last couple of weeks.

MC30's. Unfortunately, one day after receiving them the one on the left fritzed out so had to send it back to Audio Classics for repair. Should have it back hopefully in a few weeks, but until then having fun using the one on the right for mono recordings through my Cornwall's and a McIntosh C11 preamp

Prior to getting the MC30's, picked up this MC240. Sounds great, had it playing through the Cornwalls but after I got the MC30's moved it into a second system where it drives Allison One speakers.
