Vinyl LP - What's Wrong With This Picture?

I seem to recall from my understanding of stereo playback of the vinyl medium that it is labelled incorrectly.  My understanding is that one side of the groove is based on the addition of the left + right channel (L+R) and the other side is based on the subtraction of the right channel from the left (L-R).

BING!!

Quite honestly, I'm surprised it took so long for someone to answer this correctly, especially since there are so many vinyl enthusiasts around here.

And to take this one step further, there is also a vertical component - for both L & R channels. The stylus has to track up & down as well as scanning the L & R walls of the groove in order to achieve the L+R/L-R component.

Um, that's not how I read the RIAA specification, http://www.aardvarkmastering.com/riaa.htm (emphasis added):

1. The stereophonic groove shall contain two channels of information recorded as orthogonal modulations of a single groove.
2. The 45 degree-45 degree system is the standard. In this system the two mutually perpendicular axes of modulation shall be symmetrically disposed with respect to a normal to the disc surface.
3. The right hand information channel, as viewed by the listener, shall appear as modulation of the out side wall of the groove.
4. When equal in-phase signals are recorded in the two channels they shall result in lateral modulation of the stereophonic groove shall produce equal in-phase acoustical signals.
