Later I went to CVS and they were wiped out of temperature strips and almost all thermometers.  Certain over the counter symptom relievers were bare shelves as well.  Luckily they still had a Clive Cussler paperback, but it wasn't on sale...they aren't giving them away!

...There is a shutdown coming...  These things are usually announced on weekends to help mitigate the effects.  Expect a minimum of 14 days. Some 'Transportation ' companies are telling their employees to prepare.
If it does not happen, it will be a blessing.

yeah, no thermometers at the store I was at either.

cashier told me that today was worse than a Black Friday sale.

emailed a buddy that is in Germany then to Spain then back home to Indy.  Told him I didn't know how the hysteria is there, but he may want to notify his kids or close friends to pick up some toilet paper so when he gets home he has some supplies.

he was in Italy last week.  I wonder if he'll have to be in self-quarantine upon return since he was in Italy.  He went to a US military base in Germany to see if he could get tested just to avoid any travel problems, but they said they weren't testing. they told him he'd probably be checked at the airport though.

Polio terrified the country but in actuality the worst cases of polio were a very small percentage of any outbreak. Less than 5% of polio victims experienced any level of paralysis. Less than 2.5% required some level of ventilator support due to paralysis and most of those recuperated enough function to wean. Roughly 0.05% died from polio. Their paralysis was so severe that little could be done to support them. Most polio victims experienced nothing worse than a bad cold. But the shear numbers of infected meant that a lot of people required a lot of help. But if you look at typhus and diphtheria, etc they were insanely lethal. Up to 60% of untreated typhus sufferers died. It would wipe out entire generations of kids. Infectious disease was and remains really awful. Yes, we have most of it under excellent control and modern science will tackle new diseases expeditiously. Hopefully we’ll get this covid virus corralled up in short order. But there’s always the next new pathogen and as we have witnessed several times recently not every country manages diseases well....... or at all. Never become complacent about disease.

read earlier today (from some British website) that the British government likes the idea of :"herd Immunity."  basically, let people get sick because the more people that have built up immunity that is less people that can spread it.   Pretzel Logic?   What's the difference of letting most get it now opposed to most eventually getting it?

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente has declared a state of emergency in Oneida County, meaning all public schools will be closed to students from March 16 to April 14.

“While there is still currently no confirmed case of COVID-19 in Oneida County, we’re taking every measure available to ensure the health and safety of our residents,” Picente said. “Since the onset of this threat, we have partnered with federal, state and local officials to prepare, evaluate and respond to this continually evolving public health emergency. We believe this strong action is necessary and will enhance our ability effectively fight this unprecedented situation.”

If necessary, the county executive can do the following during a state of emergency:

  • Establish a curfew, as well as prohibit and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic, except essential emergency vehicles and personnel.
  • Designate specific zones within which the occupancy and use of buildings and the ingress and egress of vehicles and persons may be prohibited or regulated.
  • Regulate and close places of amusement and assembly.
  • Suspend and limit the sale, dispensing, use or transportation of alcoholic beverages, explosives, and flammable materials and liquids.
  • Prohibit and control the presence of persons on public streets and places.
  • Establish or designate emergency shelters, emergency medical shelters, and in consultation with the state commissioner of health, community based care centers.

The state of emergency will remain in effect until rescinded by a subsequent order.

Earlier Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo waived the 180 school day requirement in New York, and left the decisions on closures up to individual districts.

Several schools in Herkimer and Otsego counties also announced closures on

They shut down the Buffett at MGM and the Culinary Union is trying to figure out an answer.
