OO1
Your Immune System Evolves to Fight Coronavirus Variants Antibodies can change to counter new forms of the shape-shifting virus, research hints A lot of worry has been triggered by discoveries that variants of the pandemic-causing coronavirus can be more infectious than the original. But now scientists are starting to find some signs of hope on the human side of this microbe-host interaction. By studying the blood of COVID survivors and people who have been vaccinated, immunologists are learning that some of our immune system cells—which remember past infections and react to them—might have their own abilities to change, countering mutations in the virus. What this means, scientists think, is that the immune system might have evolved its own way of dealing with variants. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/your-immune-system-evolves-to-fight-coronavirus-variants/
OO1
New Decoy Protein Treatment Fools Coronavirus, Rendering It Impotent Treatment reduces lung damage and results in mild symptoms in a preclinical study. A novel decoy protein designed by Northwestern Medicine scientists fools SARS-Cov-2 by intercepting the spike of the coronavirus and rendering it impotent. The novel protein significantly reduced lung damage and resulted in only mild symptoms in mice infected with SARS-Cov-2, while untreated animals in this model all succumbed to the infection. https://scitechdaily.com/new-decoy-protein-treatment-fools-coronavirus-rendering-it-impotent/
OO1
Sunlight Inactivates Coronavirus 8 Times Faster Than Predicted. We Need to Know Why 2 APRIL 2021 A team of scientists is calling for greater research into how sunlight inactivates SARS-CoV-2 after realizing there's a glaring discrepancy between the most recent theory and experimental results. UC Santa Barbara mechanical engineer Paolo Luzzatto-Fegiz and colleagues noticed the virus was inactivated as much as eight times faster in experiments than the most recent theoretical model predicted https://www.sciencealert.com/sunlight-inactivates-sars-cov-2-a-lot-faster-than-predicted-and-we-need-to-work-out-why
OO1
CNY hospital spots one common reaction to Covid vaccines: swollen lymph nodes Syracuse, N.Y. – Early this year, the medical imaging department at Crouse Hospital began to notice an uptick in enlarged lymph nodes in the armpits of patients during routine breast exams. Normally, that’s a cause for concern. “An enlarged lymph node can be a flag for cancer,” said Dr. David Wang, Crouse’s medical director for breast imaging. “But an enlarged lymph node can also be seen with infection or any inflammatory process going on.” https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus/2021/04/cny-hospital-spots-one-common-reaction-to-covid-vaccines-swollen-lymph-nodes.html

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a news briefing that the prevalence of "variants of concern" is increasing and that the U.K. variant, known as B.1.1.7, has taken hold across the country. https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/uk-coronavirus-variant-now-dominant-strain-us-rcna606
OO1
AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine plausibly linked to rare brain clots, European regulators say BERLIN — Medical regulators in Britain and the European Union on Wednesday said it was "plausible" that the Oxford-AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine is linked to rare but sometimes deadly blood clots, a development that could complicate plans to roll it out around the world. The European Medicines Agency stressed that the benefits of vaccination still outweigh the risks, as thousands of people die of the coronavirus across the continent each day. But British officials advised that adults under 30 be offered alternative vaccines, noting that the calculus is different for young and otherwise healthy people who are at relatively low risk of serious covid-19. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/astrazeneca-blood-clots-europe/2021/04/07/ca5ef1dc-9792-11eb-8f0a-3384cf4fb399_story.html
OO1
Coronavirus: 'Double mutant' Covid variant found in India A new "double mutant" variant of the coronavirus has been detected from samples collected in India. Officials are checking if the variant, where two mutations come together in the same virus, may be more infectious or less affected by vaccines. Some 10,787 samples from 18 Indian states also showed up 771 cases of known variants - 736 of the UK, 34 of the South African and one Brazilian. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-56507988
OO1
CDC Says More Virulent British Strain Of Coronavirus Now Dominant In U.S. A more easily spread coronavirus variant first identified in England last year has now become the dominant strain in the U.S., the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. The variant, known as B.1.1.7, spread quickly across the United Kingdom and Ireland beginning last fall, with the more infectious version of the coronavirus thwarting restrictions and lockdowns that had earlier helped keep the original strain in check. B.1.1.7 is "now the most common lineage circulating in the United States," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a White House media briefing on Wednesday. https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2021/04/07/985079617/cdc-says-more-virulent-british-strain-of-coronavirus-now-dominant-in-u-s
tube fanatic
Israel may release the names of the unvaccinated to authorities. In view of having 80% of the population inoculated, there should not be any further concern if the treatment is truly effective. If the same laws are passed here I believe people will be attacked if their unvaccinated status is somehow “leaked.” https://www.courthousenews.com/israel-adopts-law-allowing-names-of-unvaccinated-to-be-shared/ Maynard

OO1
How Effective Is the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine? Here’s What You Should Know All three vaccines work by prompting your own cells to produce the spike protein – the protrusions on the coronavirus that allow it attack human cells – so your immune system learns to recognize and respond quickly to a real infection. Unlike the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, which deliver fat-covered bits of genetic material into your cells, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses a “shell of a virus” to carry genetic material into your cells, said Gandhi. The “shell” is an adenovirus, which normally causes colds, but has been modified so that it can no longer replicate and make you sick. https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2021/03/420071/how-effective-johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine-heres-what-you-should-know
OO1
Vitamin ---The truth - what do the studies say - Many studies have shown an association between vitamin D and Covid outcomes, but the evidence is largely observational - meaning it looks at what happens to people with higher and lower levels of vitamin D without controlling for other factors. This isn't gold standard evidence - that would a need randomised control trial, where people are allocated a treatment or a dummy version, so scientists can be clear an outcome is caused by the treatment. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-56180921
